Children on two wheels: Frankenberg fights for safe routes to school!
The children in Frankenberg draw attention to themselves with a lot of enthusiasm and colorful posters. On October 12, 2025, organized by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), the first “Kidical Mass” bicycle demo will take place in the city. This movement, which has already gained a foothold in the USA, advocates for safe school and cycling routes for little ones. And this isn't just a bit of fun, it's a serious concern!
The demo starts at 3 p.m. on the monastery forecourt on Bahnhofstrasse. Before we get started, all little cyclists can get creative from 2 p.m. Together with the parents or grandparents, we do crafts, paint posters and decorate the bikes. Costumes are expressly desired because fun should not be neglected! The route leads over eight kilometers of secured roads, accompanied by the police to ensure that all participants are safe on the road.
Protection for our little ones
The Kidical Mass action days, which will take place across Germany from September 15th to October 26th, 2025, focus on promoting safe mobility for children. Thousands of families are involved in this national project to promote road safety for the youngest. During the three-hour demo, you drive at a speed of around ten kilometers per hour and there are two short breaks planned in which you can take a short break.
One of the ADFC's central demands is the introduction of a speed limit of 30 km/h on school routes so that parents feel safe when their children make their way to school or to friends. “We also demand car-free school streets and liveable street spaces,” said a spokesman for the ADFC. These concerns are also reflected in the nationwide campaigns that ensure that children become more visible and audible in traffic. After all, you can travel independently on foot or by bike!
Community and joy
The picnic in the monastery garden after the demo is another opportunity to exchange ideas and start the journey home strengthened. Participants should bring their own food and blankets, because after an exciting adventure there is nothing better than sitting together with a snack and talking about the experiences.
The Kidical Mass action alliance represents more than 500 initiatives and associations, all of which are committed to the mobility of younger people. Over the last few years, the initiative has attracted more and more participants and shows how important the topic is. With over 230,000 participants in 2023, including in the “BiciBus” campaign – a special bicycle bus for children – it is clear that many are ready to fight for safe routes. The next action will take place in April 2024, where the children will continue to fight for their rights to safe routes.
The Kidical Mass is not just an event; it is a sign of change. Check out the details and principles surrounding mobility for children kinderaufsrad.org and let's work together to ensure that our children can explore the world safely and independently.
