GREENS demand monument agency for the Wetterau district – a step towards preservation!
The future of the historical heritage in the Wetterau district could soon blossom. As Wetterau.News reports, the GREENS in the district council have launched an ambitious proposal to establish a monument agency. This idea is based on the successful model of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district, which has had positive experiences with such an agency for around seven years.
Dr. Ina Neher, a committed member of the district council, sees the agency as a valuable opportunity to preserve historical buildings and at the same time counteract vacancies. According to her, the new agency could not only act as an advisory body, but also work in close cooperation with the housing association “Affordable Living Space in Wetteraukreis GmbH”. This interface could counteract the current challenges in housing construction and monument protection.
The Marburg-Biedenkopf model
In neighboring Marburg-Biedenkopf, the monument agency has already proven how effective such a concept can be. Here, municipalities are actively involved in reporting vacant or endangered properties. The agency also offers comprehensive consulting services for owners of listed properties, including free on-site consultations and conceptual support. These initiatives are intended not only to promote monument protection, but also to stimulate investment and economic revitalization in the communities, as the website of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district highlights.
The goal of the agency in Marburg-Biedenkopf is clear: the focus is on the sustainable use of cultural assets. They want to provide impulses that not only benefit history but also the quality of life in the communities. No wonder that the agency was recently awarded second place in the Hessian Demography Prize - a real confirmation of its valuable work.
Sustainability in monument protection
However, the relevance of monument protection is often controversially discussed. According to the German Foundation for Monument Protection, the public often sees monument protection as an obstacle to progress and as problematic in terms of energy. It is important to counteract these negative associations and emphasize that monument preservation is a crucial element of sustainable urban development.
The University for Sustainable Development is therefore looking for ways to view monument protection not just as a challenge, but as an opportunity for resource conservation and sustainability. Preserving historical buildings can also create new perspectives for the region.
The GREENS see the planned monument agency as a crucial element for sustainable regional development in the Wetterau district. At a time when empty buildings and the loss of historic buildings are increasing, it is more urgent than ever to preserve this valuable part of our history.
It remains to be seen how the discussion about the monument agency will develop further. However, one thing is certain: a good hand in selecting personnel for management could be the key to the success of this project.
