Windkunst II in Bad Nauheim: Historic mill comes back to life!
There is a lot happening in the cultural landscape in Bad Nauheim. A particularly notable step is the renaming of the historic windmill on the Long Wall to “Windkunst II”. A decorative board with this designation was recently added to the mill, underlining the town's connection to this fascinating history. The talented master student Natalie Scharfe from the Marc Fuchs painting company was commissioned to create the artistic lettering FNP reports.
The windmill, which was built in 1745, is part of Bad Nauheim's historical heritage and, along with the Waitz Tower, which is considered "Wind Art I", is part of the city's wind and water art. Both mills were destroyed in a devastating hurricane in 1824 and are now the focus of the efforts of the Bad Nauheim Wind and Water Art Association, which is planning their restoration. There is already a positive signal: The German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) will receive a earmarked donation of 160,000 euros for repair work on the windmill, such as German Monument Protection Foundation reported.
Historical significance of the windmill
The windmill in Bad Nauheim is not only an architectural relic, but also a symbol of the long history of salt production in the region. Originally built as a Dutch mill made of Taunus quartzite, it was used to pump the brine to the city's large graduation towers. Its heyday spanned from 1747 to 1824 before it was partially destroyed by a storm. Although the mill no longer has a revolving roof and is missing its wings, it remains an important part of local identity and history.
Another notable project is “Windkunst II”, which is expected to be completed this year. The city is asking for donations to support the final steps of the restoration as the mill's wings are still missing. For interested citizens, there is a donation account at Sparkasse Oberhessen and Volksbank Mittelhessen. This initiative contributes to the cultural enrichment of the city and further enhances the historical heritage.
Culture and community in Bad Nauheim
But it's not just the windmill that is the focus of attention. On September 1st, the Kneipp Association is starting a yoga course in Bad Nauheim-Steinfurth, which is ideal for beginners and takes place every Monday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Those interested can contact course leader Katja Turek to receive more information. There are also exciting discussions about mobile home parking spaces at the USA wave pool, in which the Free Voters Friedberg expressed their concerns and presented ideas for shared use.
In addition, numerous encounters between citizens from Friedberg (Hesse), Friedberg (Bavaria) and Austria have already taken place as part of the opening weekend of the “Friedberger Zeit 2025”. The historic festival attracted around 45,000 visitors and was very popular. A tour of the old town, a visit to the fire department and meetings with the mayors were on the program and ensured a lively exchange among the guests.
The event is rounded off by the VdK local association Bad Nauheim, which is planning a visit to the exhibition “Hello Freedom!” on August 18th. in Frankfurt. Departure is at 12:30 p.m. and those interested must register in advance. Bad Nauheim shows once again that community lives here and cultural enrichment is very important.
