FRM6 cycle highway: Friedberg in focus – new traffic concept creates excitement!
A new cycle highway is being built on an exciting route between Butzbach and Frankfurt, which is intended to make the region more attractive for cyclists. The planned FRM6 cycle highway stretches for a total of 46 kilometers and is therefore a promising connection that includes Bad Nauheim, Friedberg, Karben and Bad Vilbel hessenschau.de reported. The city of Friedberg has big plans to lead the route through the city center and over the Seewiese, but citizens and city politicians have recently been discussing the exact route intensively.
A western route was originally favored, but this has now been rejected. Mayor Kjetil Dahlhaus has already publicly apologized for the inadequate communication surrounding the project. The city council voted for the western route, although approval is expected. The work is expected to begin soon with a financial outlay of around 3.7 million euros, 70% of which will be covered by the state of Hesse.
Cycle highway through Friedberg
The route, which runs through Friedberg, will be 4.9 kilometers long and will make it possible to travel the route in just 27 minutes, without any waiting times, reports Frankfurter Rundschau. With a project like this, however, it is unavoidable that some parking spaces will have to be given way - here this affects up to 75 parking spaces. The feasibility study for the direct cycle connection was published in 2023 and aroused great interest. The plans aim to get more commuters from cars to bikes in order to reduce pollutant emissions and traffic noise. The new route could also reduce through traffic in Friedberg.
The previous planning also showed that around 5,000 kilometers are already covered by bike in Friedberg every day. Once the cycle highway is completed, this number could rise to around 11,500 kilometers, signaling a massive willingness to cycle. Around 1.1 million car kilometers would be saved annually by using the cycle path. These numbers are impressive and clearly show how high the potential of the FRM6 is.
Impulse for the region
The previous plans for a total of nine cycle highways in the Rhine-Main area go back ten years, but only 11 kilometers between Langen and Darmstadt-Nord have been fully implemented to date. In Friedberg in particular, plans for 27 construction measures and 34 measures at junctions are in the pipeline. There are only a few places where encroachments on private property are to be expected.
An interesting statistical support comes from the population: 65% of those surveyed feel unsafe in mixed traffic, while 94% express a clear desire for separate cycle paths. This shows that the initiatives surrounding the FRM6 cycle highway not only meet the needs of commuters, but are also intended to contribute to safety on the roads. It will be interesting to see how the plans become more concrete as they will soon be discussed in the political committees.
