Volunteering in Bad Nauheim: Summer reception with ceremony and honors!

Bad Nauheim shows its best side on June 30, 2025, when the city invites you to the summer reception. The special occasion? Honoring voluntary pillars of society who are involved in clubs and politics. In the expanded area behind graduation building I, city councilor Oliver von Massow, mayor Klaus Kreß and district administrator Jan Weckler gather to award 15 people with the prestigious state letters of honor. This honor recognizes the significant commitment of volunteers to the community, which District Administrator Weckler emphasizes by saying that volunteer work is of immense importance for democracy. FNP reports about the ceremony, which sets an example for the tireless commitment of these committed citizens.

The honored personalities were a diverse bunch: including Edgar Bandow from the SPD, Dr. Martin Düvel and Dr. Mathias Müller from the Greens and Peter Heidt from the FDP. Claudia Kutschker particularly stands out, being the only woman among those honored who is active in several clubs. Active members of Free Voters and the CDU were also recognized for their efforts, including Manfred Jordis and Sebastian Schmitt. After the award, the celebrations entered a lively atmosphere with a buffet, musical performances and a poetry slam.

Challenges in volunteering

Despite the festive occasion, the topic of volunteering was not without challenges. Christian Weinert and Sascha Wells from the Jesus Center spoke openly about the lack of young talent, because it cannot be denied that many organizations are struggling with a declining number of active members. Konrad Dörner from the support association for the Hochwald Hospital also expressed concerns about the dwindling willingness to donate. These difficulties are not isolated cases, as Dr. Helmut Francke from the Europa Union Wetterau made it clear by pointing out the overload of active volunteers.

Another example of well-deserved volunteer work is Agnes Römer, who was awarded the state letter of honor in 2022. Her commitment goes back over four decades, where she was active in various institutions, from the bookstore to the Lions Club to the art association. Today she still promotes her concerns in the world shop and in other projects. Mayor Klaus Kreß praises the deep meaning in Römer’s work, which aims to bring people closer to a fairer world. Due to pandemic restrictions, her honor took place on a small scale, but this did not detract from the appreciation of her tireless efforts. Bad Nauheim reports about the significant recognition she received.

The state letter of honor, which was founded in 1973 by the then Prime Minister Albert Osswald, remains an important symbol for those who have been involved in volunteer work for more than 12 years - a way to make society's quiet heroes visible and to honor their contributions. It remains to be hoped that the inspiring stories like those of Agnes Römer and the newly honored people will encourage others to also become active and work for the common good.
