The city of Hanau is writing a new labor market history with its labor market policy strategy “Together. Working” presented today. The mayor and head of social affairs, Dr. Maximilian Bieri presented the framework for action, which is intended to receive a boost with the upcoming preservation of Hanau's district freedom, which will come into force on January 1, 2026. The Hessian state parliament had already approved the spin-off law on February 25, 2025.
In his presentation, Mayor Claus Kaminsky emphasized the great opportunity to directly shape economic and labor market policy. The strategy aims to both strengthen social cohesion and improve participation in working life. “Together. Working” is based on three central elements that are intended to promote networked and cooperative work.
Core components of the strategy
- Eng vernetztes Arbeiten: Die Zusammenarbeit findet sowohl intern innerhalb der Stadtverwaltung als auch mit externen Partnern statt.
- Haus rund um das Erwerbsleben: Diese zentrale Anlaufstelle soll Bürgern und Arbeitgebern umfassende Informationen und Unterstützung bieten. Es wird die Prozesse vereinfachen und Nahtstellen zwischen verschiedenen Institutionen minimieren.
- Arbeitsmarktpolitischer Beirat: Dieser wird aus Vertretern der Stadt und relevanten Institutionen bestehen und ist für die strategische Weiterentwicklung zuständig.
An important aim of this strategy is to create the basis for a comprehensive range of support. The “House around working life” will play a key role here, as it will be the contact point for all questions about employment and working life. Dr. Frank Martin from the Federal Employment Agency has already described the project as a “lighthouse project” for the region.
Social cohesion in focus
But the new approach in Hanau will not take place in a vacuum. An analysis of social relationships and solidarity within the community shows that social cohesion has noticeably declined in Germany in recent years. The overall index for social cohesion fell from 61 points in 2020 to 52 points in 2023, with the area of “solidarity and helpfulness” being particularly badly affected.
This illustrates how important it is to promote social participation and reduce socio-economic inequalities. The “house around working life” is intended to act as a catalyst and strengthen the involvement of citizens in social life, which could also contribute to increasing trust in central institutions. Local politics has a key role here and is called upon to actively promote cohesion in society.
With the strategy “Together. Work”, the city of Hanau has drawn up a plan that covers both economic and social aspects and aims to meet the challenges of the time.
