Free Pedelec training for seniors: Safe through Bad Homburg!
Today, June 13, 2025, in Bad Homburg v. d. Höhe launched an important range of events for senior citizens. The Regional Traffic Service of the Hochtaunus Police Department offers free Pedelec training that is intended to specifically help increase traffic safety. This training program aims to increase confidence in using Pedelecs, which are becoming increasingly popular among older people. But there are some challenges here in particular, because the accident figures show that older Pedelec riders are disproportionately involved in accidents. According to news.de, the focus is on the special requirements placed on the drivers.
The training will take place at the “Wolfsgarten” traffic training area in Usingen and includes both theoretical and practical units. Participants expect information about traffic rules, current developments and safety-related behavior. In the practical part you can simulate and practice typical driving situations. The date for the training is July 2025 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participation is free, but those interested should bring their own Pedelec and a suitable helmet. Registrations are required and can be sent by email to jvs.hochtaunus.ppwh@polizei.hessen.de. Since places are limited, participants will receive confirmation that they have secured participation.
The current traffic situation
The accident statistics reveal worrying trends for Pedelec users. In 2023, 23,658 Pedelec riders had accidents, which is almost eleven times as many as in 2014. What is particularly noteworthy is that the proportion of people over 65 years of age who have had an accident has fallen, but still amounts to 30.1%. The likelihood of serious or even fatal injuries is also significantly higher in older people. With their new offer, the police would like to make a contribution to reducing the number of accidents and raising seniors' safety awareness.
“Having a good hand, even at an advanced age, is the key!” says local traffic experts, who underline the need for such programs. Similar training courses are already being offered in other regions of Germany, such as the ADFC RheinBerg-Oberberg cycling school in North Rhine-Westphalia, where positive feedback from participants has already led to the continuation of Pedelec courses. These courses cover topics such as safe braking, cornering and the use of motor assistance.
The flair of the region
Hesse's landscapes, typically covered in wooded areas, invite you to exercise on bicycles and pedelecs. On this occasion, more and more households have purchased a Pedelec - the number has increased from 3.4% to 15.5% since 2014. This development shows that Pedelecs also play an important role in everyday life in Hesse.
The upcoming training is not only a chance for seniors to improve their driving skills, but also a step towards safe and shared use of the roads. Anyone who is interested can register as soon as possible and thus safely take part in the growing trend of Pedelec riding.
