New rain overflow basin in Friedrichsdorf: salvation for Seulbach from 2027!
The construction site for a new storm overflow basin (RÜB) in Seulberg has been in full swing since May 2025. With an investment volume of 6 million euros, the project is intended to optimize wastewater disposal during heavy rain and supplement the capacities of the existing facilities. The RÜB is expected to be completed in October 2027. The Oberes Erlenbachtal sewage association is responsible for this, with operations manager Jens Feucht at the helm. Friedrichsdorf, as the largest area within the association, plays a central role; The neighboring communities of Wehrheim and Bad Homburg are also involved.
The new storm overflow basin will help to relieve the sewer to the Ober-Erlenbach sewage treatment plant during heavy rainfall. There are currently 25 rain relief systems in operation in the association area, 18 of which are in Friedrichsdorf alone. The new RÜB is intended to replace the existing basin that cannot be renovated and offer a capacity of 1000 cubic meters of mixed water in three chambers. These chambers can be filled independently to prevent possible contamination of the water.
Ecological improvements and legal framework conditions
As the [FNP](https://www.fnp.de/lokales/hochtaunus/friedrichsdorf-ort89302/neues-regenueberlauf Becken-projekt-soll-oktober-2027-Fertig-sein-93885658.html) reports, the water is mechanically cleaned by sedimentation of heavy components. The surplus is then released into the Seulbach in a legally harmless manner. An additional restrictor structure on the sewer is being planned to efficiently regulate the amount of water.
In order to further prevent the Seulbach from being overloaded during heavy rainfall, the city is also planning three flood polders to retain excess water. The total costs for this urban water measure amount to 1.9 million euros and are included in the investment program. The aim is to achieve good ecological status in accordance with the Water Framework Directive and thus to ensure long-term water quality in the region.
Current construction progress
Particular attention is paid to the progress of the construction site so far. So far, no major problems or obstacles have arisen when it comes to planning and implementing the massive project. Those responsible are optimistic that the schedule can be adhered to despite unforeseen challenges.
This extensive measure not only optimizes the handling of rainwater in Friedrichsdorf, but also takes an important step towards ecological responsibility and environmental protection. At a time when climate impacts from heavy rainfall events are increasing, this is much-needed progress to prevent future flooding and associated damage.
