New signs in Bad Homburg: Fight against garbage and dog excrement!

In Bad Homburg, people are tackling the growing littering problem with fresh ideas. On August 13, 2025, a new campaign was launched that uses creative signs to point out environmentally harmful “natural inhabitants”. These signs, depicting mythical creatures, symbolize the waste that pollutes nature - including bottles, cans, paper and plastic bottles. Rhein Main Verlag reports that the signs also make it clear how long this waste remains in nature. Plastic bags take an enormously long time to rot - up to 120 years, while cans even take up to 500 years.

The main goal of the campaign is to encourage people to be considerate of those around them without trying to patronize them. “We need a social rethink,” says ranger Boris Heinrich. Bad Homburg's mayor, Dr. Oliver Jedynak takes no issue with the increasing waste problem and calls for waste to be disposed of properly. The sign campaign is not only intended to raise awareness, but also to initiate a debate about how to treat each other and nature with respect, before fines may have to be imposed.

The problem of littering

Littering, the careless throwing of waste into the environment, is not only an aesthetic problem, but also an environmental problem. According to that Bavarian State Office for the Environment Littering is widespread, especially along streets, in parking and rest areas and at major events. The most common waste includes cigarette butts, take-away packaging and glass, plastic and paper waste, which are often left in green spaces.

The causes of littering are varied. There is often a lack of environmental awareness and an understanding of the responsibility that each individual has towards nature and their fellow human beings. Education and information strategies are therefore essential to promote waste prevention and enable proper disposal. For example, participation in cleaning days or information campaigns in schools could help to raise awareness.

A step in the right direction

The initiative in Bad Homburg is a step in the right direction to combat the various facets of littering. In addition to education, administrations could also actively create incentives, for example by improving disposal options, creating “litter-free” zones or using municipal advertising campaigns. Rhein Main Verlag highlights that promoting reusable options for take-away items could also be a crucial factor.

Overall, it is important that citizens realize that their small actions can have a big impact. By rethinking and sharing responsibility, nature can be preserved for future generations. When you think about garbage, you don't just think about yourself, but also about the community and the environment - and that's exactly what Bad Homburg is all about.
