Fatal bicycle accident in Oestrich-Winkel shocks the community

A tragic bicycle accident shocked Oestrich-Winkel on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. A 64-year-old cyclist deviated from his course for an unknown reason on federal highway 42, on the cycle path towards Geisenheim, and fell into the Rhine. Despite the best efforts of emergency services to take him to hospital, the man later died there. The Rüdesheim police are urgently looking for witnesses who can provide relevant information (Tel. 06722 9112-0).

During the same period, between June 9th and 11th, a theft occurred in Oestrich-Winkel. Unknown persons illegally obtained jewelry and coins from a Porsche 911 that was parked in a supermarket parking lot on Rheingaustraße. So far, no information about the perpetrators is known. Here too, the police are asking for information on the same telephone number.

Accident on federal highway 42

The introductory incident contrasts with another accident on the same federal highway 42, but closer to Königswinter. On Thursday afternoon there was a traffic accident involving three vehicles, which temporarily completely closed the road. A 40-year-old driver had to be rescued from his vehicle and the roof of the car had to be cut off. The Bonn fire department was called to provide technical assistance. Fortunately, three other people involved, two women and a man, were uninjured. The Linz-bound lane was reopened to traffic around 5:30 p.m., reports ksta.de.

The B42 is used by thousands of cars every day and is an important traffic artery in the region. There is currently only one lane in both directions on a section of the route between Bonn-Oberkassel and Königswinter due to a four-kilometer-long construction site.

Safe driving is important

With the recent incidents, the police are calling for increased caution on the roads. The official statistics on traffic violations show that the most common violations in 2024 were speeding. The authorities counted 1,865,722 cases among male road users and 547,013 among women. Alcohol and drug offenses are also a major problem, with over 76,000 alcohol-related crimes last year alone. These alarming figures highlight the importance of safe driving to avoid such tragic incidents. Further information on traffic violations is available here kba.de available.
