Frankfurt and Main-Taunus-Kreis: Strong partnership for patients!
A great commitment to shared medical care is visible in the Main-Taunus district and Frankfurt am Main. The partnership between the two cities is now being strengthened by a new consortium agreement that regulates the cooperation between the Kliniken Frankfurt-Main-Taunus GmbH (Kliniken FMT). This recast contract is seen as a viable basis for future medical care in the region and is expected to come into force from January 1, 2026, provided the relevant bodies agree.
The shared vision? High-quality, patient-friendly care close to home by 2030, while at the same time striving for a balanced annual result. Frankfurt and the Main-Taunus district are making a financial commitment to their subgroups until this year. The existing renaming of the FMT clinics to “varisano GmbH” will also come into force next year.
The new consortium agreement
A crucial aspect of the new contract is the adjustment of the Supervisory Board. Instead of 12, this will now consist of 15 members. Frankfurt and the Main-Taunus district each send four members, while employees can also elect four representatives. In addition, three external experts are added to increase the expertise of the supervisory board. Technical committees are intended to optimize the work of the committee and thus increase efficiency.
The background to this new contract is also interesting: The merger of the clinics took place on January 1, 2016, and the shareholders were forced to renegotiate due to the fact that the annual financial statements were not balanced. The new consortium agreement will be presented to the district council and the city council for resolution; votes are planned for December 11th for the city council and on December 15th for the district council.
A look at health systems
In the context of healthcare in Germany, it can be seen that inpatient medical care underwent major changes after the fall of the Wall. Hospitals in East and West Germany have become increasingly similar and have undergone extensive modernization. By 2010, a significant financial outlay of 25 to 30 billion DM was considered for the renovation and reorganization of the GDR hospitals, which also influenced today's structures in Hesse. This is in line with the aim of the FMT clinics to improve local care and at the same time increase quality [Ärzteblatt].
The new chapter of the Frankfurt-Main-Taunus clinics under the brand “varisano GmbH” is a further step in the continuous optimization of the healthcare offering. It remains to be hoped that the intended measures will be approved by the district council and the city council in the near future. With the new structures, citizens in the Main-Taunus district and the surrounding area could benefit from an improved medical care landscape.
