Sawmill in Merenberg burns ablaze - millions in damage and investigations!
On a dramatic day for the region, there was a devastating fire in a sawmill in Merenberg, in the Limburg-Weilburg district. The damage is estimated at several million euros, and numerous firefighters are deployed to tame the flames. According to the South German newspaper The roof of the sawmill has already collapsed, making fire-fighting work considerably more difficult. In order to eliminate embers, even walls have to be torn down.
What is particularly worrying is that an adjacent building belonging to a timber construction company was also damaged, although the effects here remain manageable. Most importantly, no injuries were reported. Meanwhile, the police began investigating possible arson.
Major fire department operation
In neighboring Allendorf, in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, the fire brigade is also fighting a large fire that broke out in the local sawmill. The fire, which has been active since yesterday, also caused flames to flare up visibly this morning. More than 100 firefighters are deployed, supported by a firefighting helicopter, to gain control of the situation. Detailed information about this can be found in a report by Radio FFH.
The sawmill in Allendorf stores up to four to five thousand meters of wood, which is currently being burned in a controlled manner. The initial damage estimate is around one million euros, but the final figures have yet to be determined. The fire here could have been caused by a technical defect in a machine, which further complicates the situation.
The region's fire service is in great demand and local people are concerned about the safety of their buildings. The commitment of the emergency services is acknowledged, while at the same time it is hoped that such incidents can be avoided in the future.
