Closure in Groß-Gerau: Dismantling of street furniture starts on June 23rd!

Things are currently going haywire in Groß-Gerau, as the dismantling of the street furniture that was installed as part of the “Transform-R” project will begin on June 23, 2025. This project, which was launched in the city on March 4, 2025, was initiated with the aim of improving the quality of stay in the city center. The street furniture is part of a free loan from the state of Hesse, supported by the state program “Rediscover Streets” and additional federal funding. The Rhein Main Verlag reports that the dismantling work was deemed necessary in order to plan the next steps in the project.

The dismantling work is not only a logistical challenge, but also a necessary measure to carry out the closure on Darmstädter Straße. This will be effective on the said day from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and affects the section from the intersection of Klein-Gerauer Strasse and Friedrichstrasse to Frankfurter Strasse. During this time, no-parking and no-parking signs will also be put up to ensure smooth dismantling.

Citizen feedback

The city government received over 1,000 responses in the first two months of the project. This shows that citizens are very interested in how their city center is designed. In response to the suggestions, for example, two new trash cans were installed on Darmstädter Straße. Citizens have also expressed a desire to create more parking spaces and to put forward ideas for a pedestrian zone on the street. In addition, a workshop for interested citizens was held in the city museum and an online questionnaire on citizen participation was announced in order to obtain even more opinions on how the city can be made more livable. An article on DA.News highlights that problems were also identified with the use of the information steles installed on site, some of which were empty and had a certain amount of dirt.

Residents are directly affected by the mining work, but can still access their properties. According to the city administration, there is a need for action at this point, particularly due to the increased noise pollution, which was also proven by a traffic survey in which speeds of up to 100 km/h were measured in 30 km/h zones. The planning society from Dortmund and the Goethe University Frankfurt will comprehensively evaluate the first phase of the project and present a draft resolution on how to proceed.

The look into the future

The next steps of the “Transform-R” project are already being planned. The second test phase has been suspended for the time being and new street furniture will not be set up on Darmstädter Straße. Instead, the focus will be on evaluating the first phase, whereby an in-depth analysis of technical measurement data, online surveys and feedback will be carried out to find out how the city center can continue to live. The strategic direction is determined by citizen participation and the needs of all generations. A [blog post from Govocal](https://www.govocal.com/de/blog/trends-stadtplanning-why-buerger participation-important-is) emphasizes how important it is for cities to include citizens in planning processes and respond to their wishes and thus create places worth living in.

The next steps are clear: Groß-Gerau loves its residents and their opinions. With a good hand and a committed citizen base, the city will continue to pursue its plans.
