Choir singing inspires: anniversary celebration in the Palatinate Castle Groß-Umstadt!

A celebratory evening was celebrated in Groß-Umstadt on October 25th to mark the 180th anniversary of the men's choir 1842 Groß-Umstadt e.V. and the 30th anniversary of the women's choir. This tradition shows that choral singing is not only an art form, but also an important cultural and social habit that is deeply rooted in the region. The People's Choir is one of the oldest clubs in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district and has experienced many ups and downs in its history.

The celebration took place in the Knights' Hall of the Palatinate Castle and began at 4:00 p.m. after a cozy invitation to coffee and cake. Beforehand, the guests were able to take part in a 1.5-hour city tour with wine tasting in the town hall cellar, which put everyone in a good mood. Alwin Kreher, the chairman of MGV 1842, opened the festive event and gave the starting signal for an entertaining program.

Cultural highlights

The event was characterized by musical performances that showcased the versatility and talent of the participating choirs. The women's choir opened the evening with the inviting sounds of “Hello” and “Butterfly”. Special guests of honor, such as the vice president of the Hessian Singers' Association, Christian Hofmann, and the mayor of Groß-Umstadt, René Kirch, delivered greetings that created a warm atmosphere. Kirch also presented an envelope to support the club's work, which underlines the close connection between the community and the club.

The audience experienced a colorful range of musical performances. The choirs Cantiamo from Dudenhofen and Village Voices from Habitzheim performed songs by well-known artists such as Sting, Michael Jackson and the Carpenters. The men's choir of MGV 1842 e.V. also showed their skills with songs like “Homesickness” and “Conquest of Paradise”. The dialogue between the choirs not only brought musical diversity to life, but also created a noticeable community that embodies the spirit of choral singing.

Emotional connections and community spirit

Choral singing has a long history and is often described as a means of emotional release and fostering social bonds. [Singlaut] addresses this and gets to the heart of the psychological benefits of singing together: reducing stress through the release of endorphins and strengthening feelings of community are just some of the positive aspects. The joy of singing not only attracts old hands, but has also welcomed some new members in recent months. Everyone, with or without singing experience, is warmly invited to become part of this lively community that stands for sociability and cohesion.

The MGV 1846 e.V. Viernheim, who was also invited to the celebration, also showed off their musical skills and contributed to the exuberant atmosphere. The singers impressed with “Babylon’s Falling”, “Over Seven Bridges” and “Freedom”. They also delighted the audience with encores, and the final notes of the event were sung by the women's choir with “One Way Wind” and the encore “Liebe das Leben”. As a small recognition, the board presented Hans Kaspar Scharf with a “food basket” for his work.

At the end of the festive evening, the ladies were honored with a rose and a piccolo by the gentlemen of MGV 1842 e.V. The first chairman sent warm wishes for the future and a safe journey home to everyone present.

The tradition of choral singing not only promotes art, but also acts as an integrative platform within society. The MGV 1842 Groß-Umstadt is an excellent example of how choral music is preserved as a cultural heritage and at the same time gets new impetus through cross-generational collaboration.
