Griesheim starts e-roller pilot: Future of mobility is now!
In Griesheim, there is a lot going on around the topic of mobility. From July 10, 2023, e-trollers and e-bikes are part of the cityscape, which is provided by the provider Bolt as part of an exciting pilot project. A total of 130 e-trollers and 20 e-bikes are available throughout the project until December 2025. The aim of this project is to supplement the use of local public transport and at the same time to make urban mobility more environmentally friendly. The city of Griesheim and the HEAG Mobilo are driving this innovative project together without the municipality having to pay costs, because Bolt takes over the financial aspects of vehicle provision.
e-scooters and e-bikes can not only be used in Griesheim, but also in the surrounding cities of Darmstadt and Weiterstadt. "The operating area comprises Griesheim, Darmstadt and Weiterstadt," explain those responsible. The vehicles can be flexibly parked between the cities, which really benefits the commuters in the region. According to FAZ.NET District of Darmstadt-Dieburg, one more reason to think of mobility further.
a contribution to discharging the traffic
Traffic Director Lutz Köhler (CDU) emphasizes the importance of this project to relieve the cities from car traffic. In Weiterstadt, for example, after several months of use, there is a positive picture: the complaints about incorrectly parked e-scooters are declining, and more people fall back on these flexible means of transport. The numbers speak for themselves: A study by Fraunhofer ISI proves that shared micromobility not only gained in popularity, but also contributes to significantly reducing the CO2 footprint of urban traffic.
The use of electric vehicles has turned out to be a progressive step. In Griesheim, the vehicles are placed in strategically important locations, such as tram stops. "E-vehicles are supposed to complement bus and tram connections," explains Mayor Gefa Krebs-Wetzl (CDU). Users can conveniently unlock the e-tretrols via an app and have to register with Bolt beforehand.
intelligent technology in use
A special highlight of the project is the use of modern technology. Bolt relies on the latest developments in his fleet. The electric vehicles are designed in such a way that they recognize whether they are standing or being thrown over. Some vehicles even use artificial intelligence to recognize whether users may be alcoholic and automatically switch off in such cases. This is good protection against abuse and ensures more safety in road traffic.
The acceptance of alternative transport increases steadily. More and more citizens value sustainable mobility and use the options offered. Lutz Köhler appeals to the users to use these offers conscientiously, since they are mainly intended for commuters.
outlook for the future
As the data show, increased use of e-scooters and e-bikes in the municipalities could not only improve mobility, but also make a valuable contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions. In connection with Germany's obligation to reduce traffic by 48% by 2030, the Griesheim project is a step in the right direction. The success of the approach in Weiterstadt and the increasing use of the electric vehicles give hope that a similar trend will occur in Griesheim.
The future of local transport could actually be colorful and electrical, and who knows, maybe one or the other e-scooter will remain us after the pilot project in Griesheim.
