New head for Dieburg JVA: Christian Tienes takes over!

On Monday there was a change at the top of the Dieburg correctional facility (JVA). Hesse's Justice Minister Christian Heinz officially introduced Christian Tienes to his new office and said goodbye to his predecessor Klaus-Dieter Vogt, who has gained valuable experience in his over 35 years in the penal system. Tienes, who has served as director since February 1, 2025, brings with him sound legal training as well as relevant experience from various correctional facilities and the Hessian Ministry of Justice, as rechtundpolitik.com reports.

Klaus-Dieter Vogt, born on March 27, 1962 in Fulda, left his mark on the Dieburg prison. His career in general prison service, which began in 1982, took him through various institutions, including the JVA Frankfurt am Main, where he held various management positions. He became head in Dieburg in 2018 and will take over the management of the Hünfeld JVA from November 2024, as op-online.de adds.

The Dieburg JVA and its tasks

The Dieburg JVA has established itself as a “model institution”. Not only are substitute prison sentences imposed for non-payment of fines enforced here, but also a large number of petty crimes, bodily harm, theft, fraud and violations of the Narcotics Act are managed. Currently, over a third of all substitute prison sentences imposed in Hesse are carried out in this institution, which underlines the importance of the institution.

Vogt himself aims to emphasize the orderly daily routine of the prisoners and to push ahead with construction work to renovate the old building. Hadmut Birgit Jung-Silberreis, spokeswoman for the prison directors, points out that the challenges in the prison system have increased and emphasizes the need to meet the needs of prisoners with addiction problems or psychological problems.

Statistical insights into the penal system

A look at the numbers shows that the penal system in Germany is subject to extensive changes. The last statistical report from the Federal Statistical Office as of March 31, 2023 offers deeper insights into the structure of imprisoned people. These are usually affected due to prison sentences or youth sentences imposed or preventive detention ordered. The report shows how many people are incarcerated in the various prisons and thus offers a valuable overview of the current status of the penal system in Germany.

With the change in management of the Dieburg JVA, a new phase is approaching in which Christian Tienes would like to set the tone with fresh ideas and his experience. While Klaus-Dieter Vogt has shaped an era, it is now important to take on the challenges of modern penal systems and at the same time secure successes for the years to come.
