Darmstadt-Dieburg cycles vigorously: over 677,000 kilometers for climate protection!

In the Darmstadt-Dieburg district it's all about “court and bike lock” again: from May 17th to June 6th, 2025, citizens cycled a total of an impressive 677,582 kilometers. That's an increase of over 10 percent compared to the previous year, like [LADADI.de]. This year, 21 district municipalities were actively involved in city cycling, an initiative for climate-friendly mobility that has been running in the district since 2018. The competition encourages Städlers to make their everyday journeys as environmentally conscious as possible.

The Friedrich Ebert School in Pfungstadt set the clearest example with 60,495 kilometers and also covered the most kilometers in the school area. In total, the citizens of Pfungstadt contributed 117,285 kilometers to this sustainable result, while Dieburg and Münster followed with 91,425 and 83,823 kilometers. To overcome the challenge, 225 teams joined forces - an increase of almost 8 percent compared to the previous year, when 208 teams were active.

Together for the environment

District Administrator Klaus Peter Schellhaas paid tribute to the participants for their commitment. City cycling is not only intended to promote the fun of cycling, but also to help save carbon dioxide - the estimates are 111 tonnes for this year, compared to 102 tonnes in 2024. This is a positive development, because as the Umweltbundesamt explains Metropolitan areas are shifting up to 30 percent of car journeys to cycling. Our cities and communities could not only become more environmentally friendly, but also more livable.

Cycling has many benefits. It contributes to improving air quality and reducing traffic volumes. Experts agree: every commuter who cycles 5 kilometers can save up to 365 kilograms of CO2 every year - a fantastic contribution to climate protection!

Outlook for the coming months

What's next? In September, the municipalities of Groß-Zimmern and Weiterstadt will take part in the next campaign, which will take place from September 8th to 28th, 2025. This participation is free and possible for all residents, employees, club members or students of the respective municipality. In addition, kilometers on normal bicycles, pedelecs and e-bikes are permitted - a simple way to make a joint contribution to the environment.

With this in mind: Get on your bike and pedal with a breath of fresh air! The healthy exercise and joy of driving should encourage us all to put together the best kilometers for our communities.
