Traffic chaos in Lorsch: Boy injured on scooter, driver flees!

A quiet Tuesday afternoon in Lorsch was shaken by two serious traffic accidents that raised both sad and explosive questions. On June 10, 2025 at 4:15 p.m. there was an incident in Rödchesgasse in which a 12-year-old boy on a scooter was hit by a red car. The boy was about to drive past a parked white car when a collision occurred. Fortunately, the boy only suffered minor injuries. However, the driver of the red vehicle continued her journey without any further consideration, leading to an outcry in the community. The police are asking the driver and the owner of the parked car to report to the Heppenheim police station, as well as any witnesses to the accident. Anyone who saw something can call 06252/706-0 to help clarify the incident. News.de reports about it.

A few hours earlier, on the same day, a tragic accident occurred on the B460 between Heppenheim and Lorsch. A 50-year-old racing cyclist died there in a collision with a tractor-trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer was also traveling in the same direction when the accident occurred. Details of the exact course of the accident are currently unclear, and the police have called in an expert to clarify the circumstances. While the emergency services provided first aid, the racing cyclist could not be saved on site. The B460 was completely closed for around three and a half hours after the incident. In this case, too, witnesses are asked to contact the Heppenheim police station using the same number. For more information on this, see FFH.de.

A look at road safety

These recent accidents shed light on road safety in Europe. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives or are seriously injured in traffic accidents. According to a report by the European Parliament, the number of road deaths in Europe fell by 36 percent between 2010 and 2020. Nevertheless, there are still alarming figures: in 2019, 22,800 people died in traffic accidents. This concern is compounded by the fact that younger drivers in particular – those aged between 18 and 24 – continue to be over-represented among road fatalities. The number of deaths among children also remains at a high level. Detailed statistics can be found here.

While the community in Lorsch deals with the consequences of these accidents, the question of measures to increase road safety remains: What can be done to prevent such tragic incidents in the future? The voices are becoming louder that more information about road safety and participation in traffic is required - for drivers as well as for cyclists and pedestrians. It is a necessary discourse that is becoming more important than ever in times of increasing traffic volumes and intensity.
