Summer holidays in Hesse: Discover the best excursion destinations!

The summer holidays are just around the corner and for over 800,000 students in Hesse that means lots of fun and adventure! The region will have a variety of leisure activities to offer in the coming weeks that will be a real pleasure for young and old. ZEIT highlights some of the best events and excursion destinations that are especially suitable for families.

The attractions at Edersee are a real highlight. Here the whole family can have a great time with swimming fun, a fast summer toboggan run and the impressive treetop path. If you need a shot of adrenaline, you shouldn't miss the pedestrian suspension bridge in Willingen. At 100 meters high and 665 meters long, it offers breathtaking views! The Highwalk in Rotenburg an der Fulda is similarly spectacular, stretching over 617 meters and being up to 60 meters high.

Discover Hesse's nature and culture

Another must-see is the Wasserkuppe, which invites you to many exciting experiences with its all-weather toboggan run “Rhönbob” and the gliding school. For anyone who would like to learn something about the Brothers Grimm, Grimmwelt Kassel is the right place to go. There are interactive exhibitions and you can enjoy great views from a walk-up roof.

The Miniature Worlds in Fürth offer 900 square meters of model trains with an impressive 11.5 kilometers of tracks. Even the hearts of young and old will beat faster! If you like to do puzzles, the nature escape room in Breuna is just the thing for you. A 2.3 kilometer long puzzle tour leads through nature, which is suitable for ages 13 and up.

Cultural treasures and UNESCO world heritage

Hesse can also boast a large number of UNESCO World Heritage sites. These include the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which impresses with its waterfalls and fountains. Over 750,000 liters of water flow here over a network of twelve kilometers and rise up to 52 meters into the air. At night, the waterfalls and fountains are spectacularly illuminated - a sight not to be missed. The restored Park Wilhelmshöhe also houses works of art of great importance and thus attracts art lovers.

As far as the Edersee and the surrounding national park are concerned, nature shows itself here in its purest form. The rangers show how little humans should actually intervene in the ecosystems, and the dead wood also plays a vital role for many insects and fungi. Popular events for the whole family and guided hikes like the Morning Dew Tour ensure there is something for everyone. Edersee Tourismus offers exciting insights into the flora and fauna and focuses on nature's self-regeneration.

Another beautiful place to spend your summer holidays relaxing is the Rheingau, known for its picturesque landscape with vineyards and historic monasteries. The Taunus also has a lot to offer with its countless hiking routes, the Opel Zoo and the Hessenpark open-air museum and attracts families with special holiday programs.

Use the summer holidays to discover Hesse's diversity - both in nature and in culture! There is a lot to do and experience, and the whole family can look forward to exciting adventures.
