Sure e-biking in old age: Free courses for seniors in Lauterbach!

In recent years, pedelecs and e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular, especially among older people. Cycling not only has health benefits, such as training of the heart and lungs, muscle building and promoting balance, but also offers the possibility of active mobility in everyday life. Nevertheless, there are also challenges, especially for seniors who want to switch to e-bikes. Accidents and uncertainties in dealing with the new technology are common problems.

In order to increase security on two wheels, various organizations offer free pedelec/e-bike courses for seniors (55+). On August 23, interested parties can take part in such a course in Lauterbach, which is organized by Dominic Günther, an experienced movement coordinator, in cooperation with the TV Lauterbach and the Senior Advisory Board Lauterbach. This initiative is part of the project "Movement in old age-safe through everyday life", which is funded by the ARGE GKV alliance for Health in Hesse.

course -specific details

The courses take place in the school yard of the Eichberg School in Lauterbach. There are two periods: the first course runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the second from 2 to 6 p.m. The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 10 seniors per course, which enables individual support. Interested parties must register by August 8th and specify their names, their contact details and the desired course time. Please remember that participation takes place at your own risk, your own bicycle is required and there is a helmet requirement.

In the course content, basic techniques are dealt with, such as a bicycle check or understanding the different functions of e-bikes. In addition, practical exercises for starting, stopping and coping with difficult situations are on the program. The aim is to promote fall prevention and increase safety in road traffic for seniors. These activities are crucial because older people are statistically particularly at risk of being involved in accidents.

accident statistics and security

According to a study, the number of pedelec accidents in Germany is worrying. The statistics of the Federal Statistical Office show that accidents with personal injury from 2,245 in 2014 to 17,285 in 2021 rose. It is particularly alarming that in 2021 132 people died in an e-bike accident. Compared to unmotorized bicycles, pedelec accidents often end fatally. While the number of pedelec drivers over 65 from 54.5 percent dropped to 33.5 percent 2021, a third of the accident victims from this age group remains overrepresented in the total population.

A tragic incident illustrates how serious the situation is: a senior citizen was seriously injured when a minibus carelessly drove out of an entrance and blocked her way. She reacted too late and crashed into the car, which led to a hospital stay with serious injuries, including a broken collarbone and a traumatic brain trauma. This underlines the urgency to familiarize seniors not only with the devices, but also with the situations they expect in traffic.

The initiative to promote security for seniors on e-bikes is therefore not only useful, but necessary. In Hessian cities and municipalities, not only responds to the increase in the use of e-bikes, but also actively worked on the reduction in accident risks. The ADAC also offers special training courses for newcomers, occasional and frequent drivers who convey everything essential for safety in road traffic. These training sessions should help to raise awareness of possible dangers and to improve general driving knowledge.

For all interested seniors, the perfect time is now to find out about these offers and actively work on their safety on two wheels. Secure your place in one of the courses and enjoy cycling to the fullest - safe and with fun.
