Sustainable cinema art: Saalbau Lichtspiele in Heppenheim awarded!
The “Hessian Prize for Sustainable Cinema” was recently awarded at the Cinema Wolfhagen. Six cinemas from Hesse were honored for their outstanding commitment to sustainability. This award is given every two years and recognizes special initiatives that have a positive impact on the environment and society. As the Frankfurter Neue Presse reports, the Saalbau Lichtspiele in Heppenheim is the main prize winner and was able to secure the proud sum of 5,000 euros.
The jury particularly praised the Saalbau Lichtspiele for its innovative heat pump technology and for reducing waste. In addition, they offer the “Cinema of Cultures,” a free cultural program that promotes diversity and cohesion. In total, the prize winners were able to share an amount of 10,000 euros between themselves, which is unique in the country.
Other award winners and their achievements
The award ceremony honored other cinemas that scored points in various areas of sustainability. This includes:
- FilmBühne Bad Nauheim: Mit 2.000 Euro ausgezeichnet für ihre kulturelle Nachhaltigkeit und Müllvermeidung.
- Gloria Kino Kassel: Ebenfalls 2.000 Euro für ökologische Sanierungen und ihr frauenpolitisches Engagement.
- Lichtspielhaus Lauterbach: Bekam 1.000 Euro für ihr nachhaltiges Handeln.
- Kino Traumstern Lich und Harmonie Frankfurt: Beide erhielten lobende Erwähnungen für ihre Anstrengungen im Bereich Nachhaltigkeit.
Media State Secretary Timon Gremmels presented the awards and emphasized the importance of supporting cinemas on their path to sustainability. The website arthouse cinema highlights that between the awards ceremonies, cinemas receive support in implementing sustainability projects.
Sustainability in cinema operations
But what exactly does sustainability mean in a cinema? On the Film-Hessen website It is described that sustainability encompasses all processes along the value chain. Cinemas can make a significant contribution to cultural, environmental, social and economic sustainability by:
- Kulturelle Programme anbieten, die gesellschaftliche Themen aufgreifen und Menschen zusammenbringen.
- Ökologisches Ressourcenmanagement umsetzen, zum Beispiel durch Mülltrennung und die Nutzung umweltfreundlicher Verpackungen.
- Soziale Verantwortung übernehmen, indem sie auf faire Entlohnung und Chancengleichheit achten.
- Ökonomisch nachhaltig wirtschaften, um langfristig konkurrenzfähig zu bleiben.
This year's awards ceremony showed once again that sustainability in cinema is not just a trend, but a necessity in order to continue to promote cultural diversity and social cohesion in the future. The fact that cinemas like the Saalbau Lichtspiele act as role models is an encouraging signal - and there is definitely something there.
