Committed Windberg School: Krug enthusiastic about student projects!
In Freiensteinau, Patrick Krug, the first district councilor, visited the Windbergschule and demonstrated his commitment to the Vogelsberg district. This was his 33rd visit to school, and the approximately 50 first and second graders welcomed him with heartfelt poems and singing. Krug has decided to visit all 38 schools in the district to experience everyday school life up close and get an idea of the various school projects. He was accompanied by Matthias Röse, head of the Office for School Education and Care, and Stefan Schmidt, head of the Office for Building Construction, Energy and Building Management.
The Windbergschule can look back on impressive development. The former central school is now equipped with many specialist rooms. The school principal Silvia Röll-Grätz reported on excellently repurposed rooms, including a workroom with a kiln and woodworking machines as well as a large kitchen that serves as a central location for practical teaching content. Around 100 students attend the school, around 80% of whom take advantage of the all-day program and diverse working groups (AG).
Healthy eating and digital education
A particular focus is on exercise and healthy eating. In collaboration with the rural women, the nutrition license is offered to students in the second and third grades. This course is carried out in the classroom without a school kitchen and includes the preparation of warm potato dishes. The children not only learn how to prepare balanced meals, but also how to handle food and adhere to hygiene regulations. Food worth around 12 euros is needed for the first double lesson, while additional ingredients and kitchen equipment can be brought by families. Information about implementation is available in detailed teaching materials that enable easy planning and do not require special nutritional expertise.
The school concept also includes the use of iPads in lessons to strengthen the students' Internet skills. An Internet ABC test will even be introduced in fourth grade. This complements the existing environmental projects in which the children grow fruit and vegetables in the school garden, as well as the environmental group, which deals intensively with sustainability and environmental protection. A special highlight is the use of a so-called green classroom, which offers students new learning spaces.
Patrick Krug was impressed by the diverse projects and the commitment of the teachers. He would like to continue to support the positive developments in the school sector through exchanges with students and teachers. The Windbergschule in Freiensteinau not only ensures a solid education, but also a healthy and sustainable lifestyle for the children.
