Fantastic Festival Opening: Summer Night Dreams Premiere today!

The anticipation is great - this Friday, June 20, 2025, the 74th Bad Hersfeld Festival begin with a rousing premiere of "Summer Night's Dreams". The staging of the classic work "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare is led by director Joern Hinkel and promises an exciting mix of theater, music theater and dance. Prime Minister Boris Rhein will ceremoniously open the festival, while Michael Roth, the former member of the Bundestag, will keep the speech. Other prominent guests include Timon Gremmels, the Hessian Minister of Science, Research, Art and Culture, as well as other MPs from the state parliament and Bundestag.

The ceremony starts at 6 p.m., followed by a red carpet, on which sociable onlookers can be excited about the prominence. Among the guests who have already announced themselves are Dieter Hallervorden, Wilfried Gliem and Nina Petri. The big premiere of "Summer Night Dreams" is staged at 9 p.m. in the Abbey Ruin Bad Hersfeld, accompanied by the music of the great festival orchestra under the direction of Christoph Wohlleben.

A look at the piece

Joern Hinkel's editing of the piece brings additional characters Shakespeares into history, which focuses on the topics of love and theater itself. In a fantastic dream world of confusion and turmoil of love, these are planned, the Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta are their wedding, which forms the heart of history. The performance takes about three hours, including a half -hour break, and is described as a real hymn on love. Musically, the whole thing is redesigned by Jörg Gollasch, which brings fresh sounds into the proven action. Hinkel, who staged the play in Bad Hersfeld ten years ago, breaks this version again into new heights of the theater.

The Bad Hersfeld Festival has a long tradition, the play “A Midsummer Night's Dream” was first performed here in 1961 and repeated several times. This new production promises to captivate the spectators with bizarre ideas and unexpected twists
