Crazy triumphs: Rotenburg young people over the new trendy word!

In an exciting competition for the best words from young people, “Das crazy” has emerged as the youth word of the year 2025. At the Frankfurt Book Fair it was crowned with 35.7 percent of the votes Daily Mirror reported. It stands for an all-purpose phrase that is used when you are speechless or don't want to go into detail. This election took place through online voting in which almost two million votes were cast.

Aside from “Das crazy,” “goonen” and “checkst du” found themselves in second and third place. Langenscheidt-Verlag has established this choice since 2008 in order to document and celebrate youth language. Last year's winner was "Aura", a term that stands for "positive karma".

Young people's opinions in Rotenburg

A survey in Rotenburg among teenagers and young adults aged 8 to 21 shows a mixed picture regarding the use of “Das crazy”. In a conversation with 15-year-old Rosalie Schmidt, it emerged that she uses the term regularly in her everyday life.
However, there are also dissenting voices: Melia (21) has little to do with “Das crazy”, while Chiara (20) and Leon (18) would use the word, but might have opted for “do you check”. Jessica (16) found the election exciting and would have also voted for “Das crazy” because many of her friends use the term.
In the younger age group, such as Ronja (11) and her schoolmates Yara and Nadaa, its use is controversial. Yara is a staunch supporter of “Digga” and sees “Das crazy” as no sensible alternative. Mika (8) also has no connection to the term and doesn't think swear words are any better.

Reactions and expertise

Ole Jaekel, a youth worker, is open to the new choice of words and believes that “Das crazy” is more appealing in its meaning and use than the youth word of 2024. In his work, he notices that young people are increasingly using youth language in their communication.
This development is also of interest among linguists. Germanist Nils Uwe Bahlo highlights the opportunities of “Das crazy” and explains the elliptical use of the term. Head of marketing Nikolas Hoenig also emphasizes the influence of the English language and the trend towards brevity in youth language.

In summary, the choice of the youth word shows that language is constantly changing and that young people develop their personal expression in interesting ways. Whether the words of today will shape the language of tomorrow remains to be seen.
