Bad Hersfeld high bridge: construction work begins – patience for road users!
A mammoth project is currently being realized in Bad Hersfeld: the new construction of the dilapidated high bridge over the B324. Older readers may remember the bridge, which no longer meets current regulations. After years of approval and planning processes, the construction phase has finally begun. This is what our colleagues report East Hesse News.
The demolition of the road leading to the city center has been underway for months. This work prepares the basis for the construction of the new central bridge, which extends over a length of 280 meters. Because the entire construction project takes up around 700 meters, it is a real challenge for the planners. You could say there's something there!
Complexity of the construction project
But it's not just the length of the bridge that poses challenges for those responsible. Compliance with numerous regulations and laws creates clear complexity in the replacement construction process. Surprises underground, such as pollutants in the Fulda riverbed, required special disposal and made the construction work even more complicated. A good hand is therefore required in order to stick to the schedule (completion is scheduled for 2030). The work is currently on schedule, which gives hope that it will continue smoothly.
However, a drastic event is imminent in the short term: on the first weekend in October, the route between Bad Hersfeld and Hünfeld will be closed. This closure had already been requested from the railway three years ago in order to ensure that the construction work ran smoothly. Loud Bad Hersfeld However, a major source of information in the region, there will not be a full-fledged closure during the entire construction period.
New bridge – new possibilities
Not only will the future bridge be shorter, but its design will also be modernized. Plans include, among other things, a barrier-free expansion of the pedestrian and cycle paths as well as new ramps and a passenger elevator. This will give mobility in the region a clear boost. Noise protection measures for residents will also be taken into account, which many will see as positive.
DEGES, the project management company for the planning and construction of motorways and federal highways, has been commissioned with the implementation. A look at the local traffic plans shows: 30,000 vehicles use this federal highway on weekdays, which suggests that traffic control and diversion concepts have been carefully planned. The results of the diversion concept so far have been positive; the elimination of the traffic lights has noticeably improved the flow of traffic.
Developers and residents are called upon to show patience and understanding. The construction site barriers are essential to successfully implement the project. An information evening on June 27, 2025 gave an initial insight into the progress and challenges of the project. The residents and road users in Bad Hersfeld can eagerly await the result of this complex project.
