New A7 bridge at Fulda: First half almost finished-diversion from June!
New A7 bridge at Fulda: First half almost finished-diversion from June!
An exciting step is due for the transport infrastructure in the region. The new construction of the A7 Tala Bridge Thalaubach near Eichenzell-Döllbach, which has been underway since December 2022, has made great progress. The first section of the new bridge is almost finished, and from June 18, 2025, the traffic in the direction of Kassel will be diverted to the new half of the bridge. This means a significant relief for the old bridge, which is getting on in years and has to give way to a new building.
But what exactly happens on this busy route? The traffic towards Würzburg remains on the old bridge until the end of August 2025, while the work on lanes that are no longer used, including today's drainage facilities, are going until the same time. After completing this work, the traffic towards Würzburg is also moved to the new bridge. In order to ensure security and the flow of traffic, the traffic is directed according to a 4+0 system, which means two narrowed lanes per route on a directional lane.
construction and planning
The A7 Tal Bridge, a 7-field steel bridge built in 1968, now has disused structures that are no longer sufficient for modern requirements. Reason enough to replace it with a new, safe and powerful bridge. The new bridge will be 312 meters long and 38 meters high, built from the proven material steel, which is also used for many other bridges in Germany. According to bmv.de, 70 % of the bridges in Germany are clamping concrete bridges, which makes the selection of building material understandable for this project.
Another interesting detail is the planned dismantling of the old bridge. This is to take place from autumn 2025 to the end of 2026, with the steel superstructure being divided and withdrawn into segmented parts. The construction of the western half of the bridge for the direction of Würzburg is planned for the end of 2026 or early 2027, and the entire bridge construction work should be completed by the end of 2028. In order to adapt the traffic management after construction, changes are planned on the route by 2030.
traffic safety in focus
The need for the new building results from the deficits of the existing building, as well as the autobahn.de reports. In the course of the new building, the motorway route to the east is swung, and slope protection measures are intended for the northern embankment. These points underline the main concern of the project: improving traffic safety.
summarized it can be said that the construction work on the A7 Tala Bridge Thalaubach not only creates a modern infrastructure, but also take many aspects of traffic safety and user-friendliness into account. The coming months will be exciting, not least for the commuters who rely on these important traffic axes every day.
