Canoe Club Fulda impresses with top placings at the championship!
The Fulda Canoe Club recently caused a sensation at the Central German Canoe Slalom Championships in Roudnice nad Labem, Czech Republic. Last weekend the competitions took place on a canal that is fed directly by the Elbe and offers not only sporting challenges but also a picturesque view of the old town of Roudnice. A total of almost 300 participants from 27 clubs took part in this championship, which extends over three rounds. The first race took place in Gera, while the third will take place in Haynsburg.
The athletes from the Fulda Canoe Club competed with three athletes and were able to achieve impressive results. On the first day of the competition, Eike Hosenfeld emerged as the shining winner in the U14 category and took 9th place. His brother Marlon, who competed in the U18 class, finished in a solid 7th place, while Felix Denner (U16) was unfortunately only able to reach 19th place. What is particularly noteworthy is that Eike Hosenfeld won gold with the Hessen racing community in the student category. His teammates Marlon and Felix were also successful, reaching 10th place with the team in the youth/junior category.
Capricious weather on the second day of competition
The second day of competition started with unexpected weather conditions. While the weather situation improved from midday onwards, strong gusts of wind and later heavy rain showers created additional challenges. Eike Hosenfeld was able to attract attention again and achieved 14th place in the U14, Marlon Hosenfeld made it to 10th place, and Felix Denner took 23rd place. However, Eike rounded off the competition with a remarkable 3rd place in the final sprint.
The Central German Championship is an important competition for many athletes in canoeing. Similar events, such as the German Canoe Slalom Championships, also attract numerous athletes. These championships even served as the final test for the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 2018, and for many this year they are also an important step towards larger competitions. In Hohenlimburg, for example, the fight for national titles will take place again in October 2024, when around 350 canoeists from around 45 clubs compete on the competition course with a gradient of around three meters.
All in all, the performances of the athletes from the Fulda Canoe Club show that they have a good hand both in training and in competition. Their successes in Roudnice nad Labem are not only a reason for joy for the club, but also a sign of the promising future of canoeing in our region.
