Did you know that Saint Bonifatius, one of the most important missionaries in Germany, lived on this hill around 750? He had a small chapel built here, which laid the foundation for the monastery. Abbot Ratgar followed him and built a church around 800 that was consecrated to the Mother of God 809. The mountain, which was called "Bischofsberg" until the 13th century, then received the name "Frauenberg", as the page of Franziskaner Fulda
The Frauenberg monastery is more than just a nice sight. After the arrival of the Franciscans in 1237, they lived in Fulda for almost 300 years until they had to leave their monastery during the Reformation in 1550. But fate wanted them to be called back in 1620 during the Thirty Years' War, but not to the original location, but near the Severikirche. In 1623 they finally returned to the Frauenberg and began to revive the place. After a devastating fire in 1757, which destroyed both the church and the monastery, a reconstruction was initiated under difficult conditions. The Hochstift could only provide a little building material, but the Franciscans themselves were significantly involved in the reconstruction. Today the monastery is a conference house and attracts people from all over Germany who are looking for a place for reflection and exchange. The monastery community actively asks visitors to deal with questions about faith. Tens of thousands of people come every year to receive the sacrament of reconciliation or to find advice and support in their way of faith and life. The historic monastery church is also available to many believers and is regularly visited for services. Thanks to regular renovation and renovation measures, the Frauenberg could not only be preserved, but also adapted to future needs. The newly designed guest house, which has been operated as a conference house since 2017, offers a pleasant ambience for overnight guests and seminar participants. The cooperation partner is the Antonius community foundation, which together with the Franciscans lives the inclusion in this special place. The Frauenberg monastery is therefore not only an important place in religious practice, but also a historic space that invites you to think and linger. Visits are worthwhile!
