CSD Fulda: Hundreds celebrate diversity – disputes overshadow the event

On July 15, 2025, a strong signal for diversity and acceptance was sent in Fulda. Christopher Street Day (CSD) transformed the city center into a colorful sea of colors and joie de vivre. Around 2,000 people took part in the demonstration, which had the motto “Foll Bunt” and was aimed at creating visibility for queer people. The event was organized by, among others, Aidshilfe Fulda, which advocates for the needs of the community and is an important source of support, especially in times of exclusion and discrimination.

The University Square was the heart of the celebrations, where a happy street party took place after the demonstration. In the midst of the celebrations, four young people from Fulda and the surrounding area showed courage by sharing their personal stories. Lex, Aria, Marcos and Leona London represent many who fight against prejudice and for their rights. These reports were not only touching, but also a call for acceptance. Lex, 19 years old, really wants to study art history or game design. Although he is openly out, he remains reserved in everyday life, which shows how important it is to live acceptance.

The voices of the youth

Aria, who identifies as lesbian and non-binary, also reports challenges in her family environment. She struggles with fears and longs for the safe haven of a big city where she could feel freer. A completely different picture is painted by Marcos, 17 years old, who is getting along well in Fulda with positive support from his parents. It shows how different experiences can be in the same city.

Leona London, known as a drag queen in Hamburg, talks about her difficulties in Fulda and that she was only able to find herself through the support of the community. Their experiences demonstrate the pressure that can rest on the shoulders of young queers and underscore the need for solidarity and understanding.

A turbulent festival

But not everything was peaceful. The celebrations were overshadowed by a small group of around 50 counter-demonstrators from the right-wing extremist “Young Nationalists”. Clashes between the participants of the Pride demonstration and the police developed when the officers had to intervene. There were some violent scenes, with one participant injuring two police officers with a metal rod. Despite these events, the majority of the event remained peaceful, but was overshadowed by reports of violence.

City councilor Jutta Sporer (Greens) took the floor and emphasized the importance of diversity and tolerance in Fulda. This appeal to society is absolutely necessary, especially in times when openness towards people from the LGBT*IQ community is still being tested. The term “queer,” once used disgracefully as a slur, has evolved into a positive identity marker, reflecting ongoing change and the pursuit of recognition.

In the end, the CSD shows that the desire for acceptance and respect - for all people, regardless of their identity - remains strong. The stories of the participants and the energy of the festival bear witness to ongoing change as many people continue to stand up for their rights and the visibility of their community.

Especially in today's world, when social pressure is great, such a day is more important than ever. Reports from people like Lex, Aria, Marcos and Leona are not only inspiring, they are also proof that the fight for greater acceptance and diversity continues.

We remind you that in a pluralistic society every voice counts and that we must work together to ensure the colorfulness and diversity of our world. The CSD in Fulda was not just a celebration - it was a powerful symbol for the rights of all people.
