New district manager in Witzenhausen: Passion for the forest!

Witzenhausen, Deutschland - In the Witzenhausen forest area, a change took place at the top: Stefan Bach took over the management of Hans-Ulrich Henschke in April 2025, which was known for four decades with sensitivity and commitment to forest management. Henschke once started his service as the youngest district manager in Hesse and implemented numerous improvements in a previously neglected state of the area during his tenure. His studies in forestry in Göttingen led him to the region because of a job offer, where he could initiate a remarkable development.

During his 40 years of work, Henschke faced various challenges, which were due to a poor state of care of the forest and a lack of knowledge about suitable forest economy strategies. One of his central initiatives was the reforestation with young plants and the use of growth shells in order to grow the trees optimally. Under his direction, the Witzenhausen area grew from around 1000 to over 1650 hectares, which underlines the economic and ecological importance of the area. Almost half of the forest belongs to interested parties, followed by private and city forest.

fresh wind and new perspectives

with Stefan Bach, who also studied in Göttingen, is now continuing with fresh vigor. Previously, he was responsible for budget and controlling at the Reinhardshagen Forestry Office. Now he plans to get to know the forest owners personally and to comprehensively advise them in economic and sustainable aspects. The geological conditions in Witzenhausen in particular favor the development of deciduous forest, while conifers, such as the spruce, are more difficult in this region.

Special attention has paid to the Elsberebere, a tree species whose seeds are used in trees in Schleswig-Holstein. This commitment to the region is also reflected in the decision of Henschkes to use climate -friendly tree species such as Baumhasel, Douglasia and Turkish fir in the reforestation. These tree species not only have a better adaptability to the changed climate conditions, they also offer sustainable future prospects for the forest.

A look over the borders

In the heart of Hesse, there is also a trend that also affects federal states such as Bavaria: the focus is on climate -tolerant tree species. In the Königsberg city forest, for example, the city of Königsberg is making a good example by relying on the planting of 2500 white firs, 500 mountain hamers, 500 Douglasia and 800 spruces and thus actively counteracting climate change. This mixture hopes that this mixture is better adaptable to the future. The planning is carried out under the supervision of district manager Clemens Beyer and his team, who also pursue the goal of integrating both needle and deciduous trees into healthy mixed forests.

The developments in Witzenhausen and in the Königsberg city forest clearly show that forestry plays an increasingly important role in dealing with the challenges of climate change. So it remains exciting how the forests will develop in the next few years and what measures are still taken to preserve and promote nature.
