Harvest festival in Witzenhausen: tradition meets modern preparations!
In Witzenhausen the anticipation of the 168th Thanksgiving and local festival is growing. On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the time has finally come. Preparations have been in full swing for weeks and months. Gerhard Kulle, a dedicated master gardener, is currently busy collecting the ears of grain for the traditional harvest crowns. In total, up to 200 square meters of grain are processed by hand. The ears of grain are sorted and bundled directly in the field to create the beautiful crowns that will play a central role at the festival.
But it's not just the harvest crowns that are the focus. Another highlight of the festival is the carillon. This was initiated in 1963 as part of the harvest festival committee and was heard for the first time from the town hall tower in 1966. In recent years, the maintenance and preservation of the glockenspiel has been in the hands of the Witzenhäuser bell ringers. After it was dissolved, Mayor Lukas Sittel personally took responsibility, and since 2025 the Harvest Festival Committee has sponsored the special carillon.
The preparation is in full swing
The first work in preparation for the festival included cleaning the carillon and the town hall clock, an important tradition that is intended to ensure that everything appears in the best possible light for the festive event. In addition, posters and banners with fresh designs can already be seen in Witzenhausen and the surrounding area and contribute to the festive atmosphere. Despite the rainy weather at the end of July and beginning of August, the members of the committee did not let it get them down and continued to work energetically.
The harvest festival is not only a celebration for the Witzenhäuser, but it also shows the connection to the region and its traditions. There are numerous stage performances and activities on the program that will attract both locals and visitors. This community event is an integral part of cultural life and promises to delight audiences with a colorful mix of tradition and entertainment.
How the preparations develop remains to be seen. One thing is certain, however: In Witzenhausen, the time leading up to the big festival is used to prepare everything on time and in accordance with the weather. Ultimately, everyone wants to make sure that the Thanksgiving and home festival is an unforgettable experience.
