Wiesenschule Ulfen: Unique flex class delights children and parents!

The Wiesenschule in Ulfen is celebrating a special anniversary: the building turns 70 this year. In the midst of a unique school concept, the educational institution brings a breath of fresh air into school life. The current school has 38 children who are taught in two classes, which creates a family atmosphere. Headmistress Waltraud Bäck, who has been at the helm of the school since 2005, and her team have introduced an innovative “flex class” that is unique in the Werra-Meißner district and enables flexible school entry. This unique form of school allows students to complete the first two grades in a variable period of time.

This year the meadow school will also be part of the celebrations for the 1250th anniversary of the Sontra district. During an open day, visitors can get to know the special features of the school. Another highlight is the new school song by Jürgen Bach, which was inspired by the children's preferences and is already causing a stir in the school community. This shows how much the school responds to the needs of its students and promotes their creativity, as HNA reports.

Unique learning conditions

However, the concept of the Wiesenschule goes beyond the introduction of the flex class. The children learn in an environment without a break bell, which allows them to organize their own break times and work flexibly. The school also offers all-day care from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., including lunch in the village community center. This is particularly important because collaboration with the community and local institutions such as the support association and the “Ulfener Jungs” brass band is strongly encouraged.

Another highlight are the working groups (AGs), which cover exciting topics such as computers, board games and yoga. These offers not only promote the interests of the students, but also contribute to holistic development. School social worker Thorsten Vogt offers a children's consultation once a week and supports projects that deal with the topics of “we” and “strengthening the ego”.

The role of the flex class in the education system

The introduction of the flexible school entry phase has proven to be particularly important. Many educational approaches repeatedly emphasize that children's prior knowledge can vary, influenced by the education of their parents and the social situation of the family. It is therefore of great importance to create a space in which children at different levels of development can be accommodated. In this sense, the Wiesenschule is an excellent example of how a flexible concept can be implemented in primary schools, which other institutions could use as a model. The goal is clear: leave no child behind!

With innovative teaching design, the Wiesenschule not only contributes to the individual support of its students, but also lives the idea of community and integration. It remains to be hoped that this model will be adopted by other schools in the Werra-Meißner district and beyond in order to enrich the educational path of all children.
