Heat wave threatens Witzenhausen: experts demand immediate action!

The summer heat is difficult for many people. The last few years in particular have made it clear how dangerous periods of extreme heat can be for health. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 2,800 people in Germany died in 2024 as a result of extreme heat. An alarming number, not least compared to the 8,700 deaths in 2018. In view of this development, health organizations such as the German Medical Association, the German Nursing Council and the German Alliance for Climate Change and Health are urgently calling for protective measures against heat. HNA reports that…

There is currently no specific heat protection action plan in Witzenhausen, but the city administration plans to develop one in the coming years. While the Werra acts as a natural air conditioning system and ensures cooling, the need for targeted measures is becoming increasingly urgent. On the market square, citizens can refresh themselves at a drinking water fountain or a water feature. Information about heat is currently provided selectively by the city administration - particularly in the form of fire safety information - but a systematic approach is still missing.

The Werra-Meißner circle and its participatory activities

The Werra-Meißner district is working intensively on a climate adaptation concept that is being developed together with 15 municipalities. The challenges are diverse: heat waves are particularly stressful for children and older people, while storms and drought damage forests and fields. The risk of flooding due to heavy rain will also increase. Forecasts show that the intensity and frequency of such events will continue to increase in the future. Weissenborn.orts.app points out...

A broad range of citizen participation is intended to ensure that the population is actively involved in the planning. Citizens are invited to enter their personal experiences with climate change, such as observations of heavy rain or allergies, via the platform www.klimaadaptation-wmk-mitmachen.de by February 28, 2025. A kick-off event on climate adaptation will also take place in the community of Weißenborn on March 14, 2025.

Health consequences of heat

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) plays a central role in better understanding the health consequences of heat. Climate change is described by the World Health Organization as the greatest health threat to humanity. Older people, pregnant women and marginalized social groups, who often have fewer resources, are particularly at risk. The RKI has already launched projects to investigate excess heat mortality in Germany and to further develop its methodology for estimating these deaths. The RKI reports that...

There is currently no legal obligation for municipalities in Germany to draw up heat protection action plans, although the Conference of Health Ministers recommended this in 2020. Many cities, including Bochum, Leipzig and Mannheim, have already initiated their own plans. Deutsche Umwelthilfe therefore criticizes the lack of effective protective measures in many cities.

It remains to be seen when Witzenhausen will actually take action and whether the planned measures will have an impact in time. What is certain, however, is that the issues of heat and climate adaptation are of central importance for the future development of the region. Those responsible are required to demonstrate a good hand in implementation and to involve citizens in the measures.
