New self-help group for dementia relatives in Waldeck-Frankenberg!

The challenges in everyday life with relatives suffering from dementia can be a real test for many people. In order to create a space for exchange and support, a new self-help group for relatives of dementia patients is being set up in Waldeck-Frankenberg. The kick-off will take place on Wednesday, February 11th, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Battenberg Health Center, Senonchesstraße 3 A. Here, those affected have the opportunity to discuss their worries and fears in a protected setting.

An important focus is on the fact that dementia includes various diseases that can severely impair thinking, remembering and orientation. Establishing this support group allows participants to share personal burdens and receive support from others who are in similar situations. For the regular meetings, further meetings are planned once a month, with the group being limited to a maximum of ten participants.

Registration and contact

To take part in the self-help group, you must register by telephone by December 15th. Anyone interested can contact Yvonne Welker on 06452/9379973 or Angela Weber on 06452/913140. If you have further questions, the self-help contact point is available on 05631/954-1888.

In addition to emotional support, the self-help group also offers information on practical topics such as long-term care insurance, dealing with the illness and legal aspects. It is known that around 440,000 people in Germany develop dementia every year, with two thirds of those affected being cared for at home by relatives. This responsibility often brings with it excessive demands. Self-help groups can offer valuable relief here because they enable exchanges with people who have similar experiences and can be an important source of information. The Wegweiser Dementia platform also provides information about other groups and support options.

Offers of help and support systems

This self-help group is not the only help that relatives can benefit from. Free nursing courses are also offered, which are financed by the nursing insurance fund. Many relatives would do well to find out about the various offers of help in good time and to take advantage of them. Aids such as GPS trackers or ergonomic cutlery can make everyday life much easier. The German Alzheimer Society also offers comprehensive support, including hotlines and courses for relatives.

Understanding the disease is a crucial factor. Relatives should not only look after the well-being of the person suffering from dementia, but also pay attention to their own health and always take advantage of opportunities to provide relief. The exchange in the self-help group shows that you are not alone in your responsibility and that help is nearby.
