Frielendorf loses its Rewe market: significant loss for the community!
Another serious loss is looming in the Hessian community of Frielendorf: the Rewe market will close at the end of 2025. This emerges from an official confirmation from the Rewe Group, which describes the closure as a result of a realignment in the competitive environment and due to stressful economic conditions. The market is currently run by Martin Knapp, but he is not allowed to comment on the situation. Solutions have already been found within the Rewe Group for the 28 employees affected by the closure; You can look forward to job offers in surrounding Rewe or Nahkauf stores.
The news has already made waves in the community of Frielendorf. Mayor Jens Nöll, who is currently on vacation, could not be interviewed and his representative could not provide further details about the closure. Many citizens view the departure of the Rewe Markt as a painful loss, especially considering the fact that the Penny Markt in Frielendorf has been closed since October 2023 and the Edeka Markt is now the only remaining shopping option.
A worrying development
The Rewe Group is aware of the critical local supply situation in rural regions and has emphasized that it continues to strive to ensure local supply through existing retailers and surrounding markets. Innovative concepts such as the Nahkauf markets and the Nahkauf Box, an automated shopping format, are considered part of this strategy. Similar self-service shops and food vending machines have already been implemented in the neighboring towns of Loshausen and Neukirchen.
This closure in Frielendorf joins a series of similar developments in other regions of Germany. For example, a Rewe market in Sielmingen, Filderstadt, will close in mid-August 2025; Residents there are also disappointed because after the closure there will only be one discount store available. These changes reflect the challenges currently facing the food industry and highlight the need to develop new approaches to local supply.
A look at the future
The closures, like those in Frielendorf and Sielmingen, are not just local events, but part of a broader change in retail that affects both grocery stores and other areas such as clothing and services. The Rewe Group recently took over an additional 15 “Mein Real” branches, which was approved by the Federal Cartel Office. This happened in response to the bankruptcy of Real, a former market leader that now has only 62 stores left out of its former 276.
This shows that the development in Frielendorf should not be viewed alone, but embedded in a larger context that is also important for other communities in Hesse. The future of local supplies remains uncertain, local markets must adapt in order to continue to meet the needs of citizens.
