Thick smoke in Melsungen: Fire brigade rescues from burning kitchen!

An unpleasant scenario took place on July 12, 2025 in an apartment building on Jenaer Strasse in Melsungen. After neighbors smelled smoke around 10:30 p.m., they quickly pulled the emergency brake and alerted the fire department. The reason for this was a forgotten pack of dishwasher tabs on an electric stove in the kitchen that was switched on. Fortunately, the new tenants who were currently renovating the apartment were not present, so no injuries occurred. The fire brigade was quickly on site with 14 emergency services and was able to prevent anything worse from happening.

The fire brigade's intervention quickly had an effect. Using a special tool, the door to the apartment was opened, the electric stove was switched off and the dishwasher tabs were brought outside. High-pressure fans were also used to clear the apartment of the thick smoke. Fortunately, after thorough ventilation, the impact on the apartment itself was minimal; only a slight smell of smoke remained. Nevertheless, the destroyed door lock had to be replaced and the key for the new lock was handed over to the police. A notice on the apartment door informed the tenants where they could pick up the key when they returned. A friend of the tenants was able to inform them of the incident by telephone.

Smoke alarms as life savers

The statistics underline how important the use of smoke alarms is in such situations. Over the last 30 years, the number of fire deaths in Germany has more than halved, although older statistics from the Federal Statistical Office show that significant risks still exist every year. In 1990 there were 787 fire deaths, while in 2020 that number fell to 388. The number of fire deaths has been decreasing since the 2000s, but the number of fire brigade operations in fires and explosions has been increasing again since 2014, which makes it clear that the risk of fire is still present. As rauchmelder-lebensretter.de highlights, modern smoke detectors can make a decisive contribution to preventing greater damage and saving lives in such emergencies.

Fire protection in everyday life

The cause of the fire in Melsungen also reminds us of the risks associated with the use of electric stoves. According to brand-feuer.de, unattended stoves can easily become a fire hazard. Adhesion of burnt plastic and the formation of burn marks are common occurrences when stovetops are not kept in view. To prevent such incidents, you should never extinguish burning fat with water and be sure to switch off devices completely or unplug them while on vacation or at night.

The events in Melsungen are another wise reminder of the need to always keep a close eye on fire hazards. It's good to follow the simple rules in everyday life - it could save your own home and life.
