In the early Thursday morning, the inhabitants of Schrecksbach in the Schwalm-Eder district were surprised by a dense cloud of smoke that was floating over the industrial area. A devastating fire in a fish market warehouse quickly developed into a large fire that caused considerable damage. The fire brigade was alerted at 4:50 a.m. with the operational keyword F3, but when the first emergency services arrived, the warehouse was already on flames, as Osthessen News reported.

The dense smoke development was so massive that the B254 had to be blocked in both directions. Community fire inspector Daniel Platte said that two respiratory protection teams immediately started fighting. In order to have enough extinguishing water, an outdoor attack was necessary. The supply line from the adjacent Schwalm was quickly placed to help the extinguishing teams to fight the flames. Around 130 firefighters from surrounding communities such as Schrecksbach, Neukirchen, Willingshausen, Schwalmstadt and Oberaula were in action to extinguish the fire.
