Vellmar is planning major renovations: a new outdoor swimming pool for 6.8 million euros!
Something is happening in Vellmar! The city is planning a comprehensive renovation of the Obervellmar outdoor swimming pool, which has attracted loyal bathers since it opened in 1954. With an investment volume of 6.8 million euros, the city administration wants to modernize the bathroom and make it fit for the next few years. The decision will be on the city council's agenda on December 15, 2025, as HNA reports.
The ambitious project is to be financed through a loan and funding, including from the Hessian swimming pool investment and modernization program. In recent years, over 190 investment projects in Hessian outdoor and indoor swimming pools have benefited from state funds - more than 50 million euros went into upgrading these important leisure facilities, as the Hessenportal informs.
Modern plans for the outdoor pool
The renovation brings with it numerous changes that are intended to make the outdoor pool fit for the future. Plans include biological water purification, which works without chlorine, and heating the water using a heat pump. In addition, the swimmers' pool will be equipped with three 50-meter lanes and new changing rooms and a kiosk will be built. A new water slide is intended to increase the fun factor even further, while the historic diving tower is retained.
During the construction work, the city of Vellmar is cooperating with the Fuldatal forest swimming pool, so that there are sufficient swimming opportunities available during this time. This ensures that bathers do not have to forego their leisure activities even during the renovations.
A step into the future
Previous reports had advised against renovating the outdoor pool and even recommended building an indoor pool, but the city leadership around Mayor Ludewig and Treasurer Milzarek-Staub have now decided to re-examine the renovation costs for both pools. The goal is clear: the outdoor pool renovation should not only meet current needs, but also increase the attractiveness for families, seniors and children - in line with the Hessian funding program SWIMplus, which promotes the upgrading of swimming pools as central meeting places.
The project is supported by the “Friends of the Vellmar Outdoor Pool”, which advocates for the interests of bathers and actively supports the renovation plans. The local community is enthusiastic and is optimistic that many happy hours can be spent on the water again after the planned opening in the third quarter of 2029.
