Kassel and Vellmar: Finally under construction - but when finished?

In Hesse, the cycling infrastructure is screwed vigorously - but at a pace that does not cause enthusiasm. The construction work for the cycle fast path between Kassel and Vellmar is currently underway. This is said to run over a length of around 7.5 kilometers, is fully illuminated and is to be cleared even in winter. The ambitious goal is to draw up to 8,400 bike fans on the new way every day, as the Tagesschau reports .

The construction work in Vellmar started in 2024, while Kassel started in several sections this week. Most of the Radschnellweg in Vellmar could be completed in the coming year, but the approval for a critically important 300 -meter -long section is still pending. The planning of the project has taken over a whole decade, which many bicycle friends are skeptical.

The lighting situation is also refreshed and security measures are implemented according to the quality standards for fast -moving fasteners. Particular attention is paid to an environmentally friendly design, whereby old trees are integrated and new plantings are made to enrich the cityscape.

Although around 13 kilometers of cycle paths have already been completed in Hesse-about five kilometers in the past two years-there is massive criticism from the general German bicycle club (ADFC). These complain about the sluggish implementation and demand that the country take the construction work into hand. There are currently four other projects with a total of around 50 kilometers in the construction phase. Twelve speed fast connections with over 290 kilometers have already passed through feasibility studies, and six more are still in the planning, as from the Nahmobil Hessen

The Ministry of Transport alone plans to accelerate processes through the reduction of bureaucracy in order to advance this important area faster. A small ray of hope is the cycle fast path between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, where eleven of the total of 25 kilometers have been implemented. And the second bike fast path in Kassel, to Baunatal, is still in the planning phase - we can only hope that things will roll faster here too.
