Kassel: Suspected drug dealer arrested at Lutherplatz!

A 56-year-old suspected drug dealer was arrested on Lutherplatz in Kassel on Friday afternoon. The investigators from the OE City and the city police had observed the man, a Spanish national living in Kassel, in several drug deals. During the check, the officers found around 10 grams of heroin, 22 ready-to-sell seals with heroin and almost 100 euros in cash in typical denominations. They also had a forbidden telescopic baton with them.

The arrest was prompt and the man was taken into custody for further questioning. His apartment was also searched on the orders of a judge, but investigators found no other drugs. Criminal proceedings were initiated on suspicion of illegal trafficking in narcotics. The action is evidence of the police's ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crime in the region, which, according to HNA, has reached alarming proportions.

The rise in drug crime

The current arrest is not just an isolated incident, but part of a larger trend. According to reports, around 347,000 drug crime cases were recorded by police in Germany in 2023, an increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. What is particularly striking is that around 208,000 of these cases involved cannabis, whose legal status has partially changed since April 1, 2024. Nevertheless, the market for illegal drugs remains a dangerous place, as Statista highlights.

As you can see, the drug trade attracts more aggressive dealers, which not only affects crime statistics, but also affects people's sense of security. The problems are particularly visible at Frankfurt Central Station, another drug trafficking hotspot. Around 450,000 people pass through here every day and the police are struggling to keep the situation under control. Dealers warn each other about police action, and many quickly return to action after being briefly arrested. According to Welt, women in particular feel a high level of insecurity and avoid certain areas of the train station.

Security measures and challenges

The railway security forces are on duty, but have no police powers and can only hold suspects until the police arrive. This complicates legal action against the dealers, as the B level of the train station is considered a public space, which complicates trespassing charges. The police spokesman emphasizes the need for a collective effort to combat the drug problem, as drug-related crime remains a serious social problem. The number of drug deaths has increased in recent years and was around 2,230 in 2023, which illustrates how serious the situation is.

Given the increasing challenges posed by drug trafficking, it is hoped that the recent arrests and specialized controls will have a positive impact on security in Kassel and beyond. The population is counting on effective action by the authorities to break the cycle of drug-related crime.
