VW separates from temporary workers: Future in the Kassel plant remains uncertain

The automobile manufacturer Volkswagen is currently meeting a change in his Kassel plant in Baunatal. After 720 temporary workers were discontinued last year to help electrifying this significant production location, some of them are now facing the uncertain future: the contracts will not be extended beyond the summer of 2025. Plant manager Jörg Fenstermann confirmed this at a works meeting on June 4, 2025, where the employees present were able to experience positive developments regarding future investments.

Overall, the plant management together with the works council looks optimistic about the future. VW plans to invest a whopping 800 million euros in the factory to manufacture new electrical products. In addition, 200 million euros should flow into different areas, including 90 million euros for spare parts logistics. The works council sees these decisions as a significant contribution to long -term employment securing, even if around 400 other temporary employees are hanging in the queues by the end of the year.

a key role in e-mobility

The Kassel work is of central importance for the supply chain of electric vehicles based on the modular electrical construction boxes (MEB). As electrive.com , the electrical engines App310 and App550 are installed here. Since 2023, the plant has also been developing power electronics for future electrical vehicles.

VW Group CEO Blume emphasized the relevance of the location for the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) at a press conference. This platform is expected to be introduced in 2028, but could also experience delays beyond this date through several reports. Volkswagen plans to produce one million units annually with the Kassel work as a development and production location for electrical engines and pulse inverter.

The way to the future

In the Baunatal plant, where around 15,000 people are employed, the majority of the electrical drive train is produced. The upcoming electric models of the company should finally be based on the SSP. This location becomes the heart of the upcoming electrical mobility of VW. While the future is still uncertain for some of the temporary employees, a promising foundation for the e-car is also being worked on.

Developments related to the VW plant in Kassel show that both challenges and opportunities collide here. However, the look forward remains optimistic, and the upcoming investments could lead to stronger employment security and create new perspectives.
