Frankfurt and Baunatal: The best bicycle cities in Germany 2025!

The good news for cyclists in Hesse: Frankfurt set up the crown in the current online survey of the ADFC and the Federal Ministry of Transport and has been elected to the bicycle-friendly city of Germany. Many people, around 213,000, took part in the "ADFC bicycle climate test" in 2022, which is not representative, but still offers a comprehensive insight into the satisfaction of cyclists: inside. Almost 18,000 from Hesse were underneath and handed over their voices.

Frankfurt was able to prevail among the 15 largest German cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants and overtook Bremen on the way to the top. The improvement of the cycling infrastructure, in particular the expansion of the bike paths, was recognized as the key to this success. Baunatal, a city with a population between 20,000 and 50,000, was also able to look forward to the title of the most bike -friendly small town.

results at a glance

The rankings show not only the leaders, but also the development in different cities:

  • Frankfurt: 1st place among big cities
  • Baunatal: 1st place in the category 20,000 to 50,000 inhabitants
  • Darmstadt: 2nd place for cities with 100,000 to 500,000 inhabitants
  • Frankenberg (Eder): 1st place in the “catching up” category for municipalities under 20,000 inhabitants

The positive development in Baunatal can be attributed above all to the excellent accessibility of the city center and the ideal conditions for fast cycling. In Darmstadt, on the other hand, there were worrying declines in the rating areas of bicycle promotion and public relations for cycling. Nevertheless, the city remains in the upper ranks.

A look into the future

The next round of the ADFC bicycle climate test is already at the door: From September 1, 2024, cyclists will be called again: inside, called to evaluate their cities. The survey that runs until the end of November has the goal of improving the coexistence in traffic. In addition, there will be questions about the perception of the behavior of other road users. The results will then be presented in Berlin in spring 2025.

This initiative is not only important for cyclists, but also for the traffic planners: inside and political decision -makers. The collected feedback supports the improvement of the cycling infrastructure sustainably. The ADFC, the largest advocacy of cyclists in Germany with over 230,000 members, relies on this exchange in order to meet the needs of cyclists.

A total of 50 municipalities in Hesse have improved since the last survey, while 41 had to accept a step backwards. This dynamic development shows that bicycle traffic is becoming increasingly important in many regions. An exciting time for everyone who appreciates the bike as an environmentally friendly means of transport!
