Allendorf/Eder: Brunnenplatz becomes a green oasis for 400,000 euros!

In Allendorf/Eder, the old parking lot at Brunnenplatz is being redesigned and will soon be transformed into an attractive green and recreational area. In the course of the redesign, a lot of money will be put into our pockets, with a total of around 400,000 euros being budgeted for it. Originally the estimated costs were 600,000 euros, but these were reduced through targeted planning and cost reductions. The grant from the Leader program to promote rural development amounts to around 100,000 euros, which gives the project additional impetus. According to the HNAx the square is targeted for completion in May 2026, which will give the community enough time to carefully consider all the details to plan.

With a concept that was presented by GTL Landschaftsarchitektur in Kassel in 2023, the focus is on positive usability for citizens. Not only will there be a better demarcation from the street, for example through a hornbeam hedge, but the equipment with benches, a table, plant islands and a drinking water dispenser will also enable comfortable stays outdoors. A small downer remains: after the renovation there will only be two parking spaces and three bicycle racks in front of the Heß house. However, access to the Heß house will remain guaranteed throughout the entire construction period, so that residents can continue to easily reach what they need.

Green thumb and new paths

The new pedestrian route not only brings a breath of fresh air to the design of the square, it also ensures that future walks will be enriched by an inviting fountain square. Demolition work, which began in mid-October 2025, is already underway, and construction is expected to be completed by “Singing into May” 2026, weather permitting. The good news for nature lovers: No tree felling is planned for the redesign; on the contrary, new trees will be planted. However, a rotten tree was removed 15 years ago, so the redesign also has a certain sustainability.

In today's world, it is important to pursue such projects as they not only beautify the cityscape but also contribute to the quality of life of citizens. Converting concrete areas into green retreats is a step that many communities in Hesse could imitate. While Allendorf/Eder is working towards a new fountain square, it shows once again how important it is to create open space and promote community spirit through such beautiful places.
