Police stop dangerous trailer – 15,000 euros fine for driver!
In the Waldhof industrial area in Offenbach, the police have removed a dilapidated trailer from traffic that potentially posed a major danger to road traffic. An alert driver reported the vehicle carrying an enormous load of steel. During an inspection by a patrol from Heusenstamm, the officers discovered that the trailer was missing a complete wheel and the tires were badly worn. According to police, this could have resulted in a catastrophic accident if the vehicle had continued to drive. Surprisingly, the driver had already received instructions from the motorway police the day before not to continue driving, but continued the journey on the orders of his company.
The legal consequences for the 27-year-old driver and the responsible shipping company are significant. The fines amount to around 15,000 euros, which illustrates the urgency of safety measures in the transport sector. In addition, the driving data from the tachograph shows massive violations of legally required rest and break times. Unfortunately, such disregard is not an isolated case in the industry; as the VerkehrsRundschau reports, some trucking companies and logistics companies are manipulating their trucks to complete orders with fewer breaks and more speed. These “ticking time bombs” pose a risk not only to drivers, who are often poorly paid, but also to all other road users.
Risks and challenges in freight transport
Transporting goods on public roads brings with it a number of challenges that should not be underestimated. The DGUV highlights the dangers associated with driving commercial vehicles, particularly because drivers often work in changing and often unfamiliar jobs. Such working conditions require special safety measures, especially when loading and unloading and when handling the vehicle technology.
The regulations not only include information on the suitability and testing of vehicles, but also instructions on how to work safely with commercial vehicles. Important aspects here are coupling, parking, reversing and correctly securing the load. Given the physical and psychological stress drivers face, it is crucial that employers take responsibility for the safety of their employees seriously.
