Hanau Mayor Kaminsky is retiring early!
Claus Kaminsky, the mayor of Hanau, is currently causing a stir in the city. The 65-year-old politician has submitted an application for early retirement, which is now being examined by the city administration. Officially, his last day of work will be September 30, 2026, as the city of Hanau confirmed on Thursday, reported Frankfurter Rundschau.
This decision does not come as a surprise, as Kaminsky had already announced in 2020 that he would not run for re-election. However, this attitude changed as a result of the terrorist attack on February 19, 2020 and the corona pandemic. In a letter to his SPD colleagues, he explained that he would like to decide to retire with the help of a new regulation in the Hessian municipal code, which allows him to withdraw before the end of his term of office under certain circumstances.
Political succession debate
The Hanau magistrate will decide on Kaminsky's retirement application on June 16. Following the deliberations, a press conference with Kaminsky, Mayor Maximilian Bieri (SPD) and city councilor Isabelle Hemsley (CDU) is scheduled. Both are considered possible successors to Kaminsky in the mayor's office, while he is neutral about Hemsley's candidacy. Kaminsky will also support Bieri's election campaign.
What is particularly noteworthy is that Kaminsky has been mayor since 1995 and took over the office of mayor in 2003. His regular term would have lasted until November 2027, but the new developments raise questions about the future leadership structure in the city.
Current events in Hanau
However, the city of Hanau is not only in focus because of the political changes. Coincidentally, a fight was reported on Freedom Square on June 11th, in which one of the people involved was injured in the head. Such incidents could add fuel to the city's conversation and underscore the challenges that Kaminsky and his successors may face.
The next period is likely to be exciting, not only because of the upcoming decisions in the town hall, but also in terms of the reactions of the population and further developments in Hanau. As the saying goes, “there’s something going on” – and the city’s future is at stake.
