New community forest in Hanau: trees for a better climate!
In Großauheim, a district of Hanau, a new community forest on Heinrich-Heine-Weg is being inaugurated today. This grand opening is not only an occasion for celebration, but also a real benefit for the environment and the sense of community. Numerous tree donors and other guests are expected at the ceremony, which will be opened by the committed city councilor Isabelle Hemsley.
The importance of trees was also the big theme of the event. Hemsley emphasizes that they not only symbolize roots and memories, but also represent a new beginning. An important aspect of the project is sustainability: The newly planted trees are intended to make a valuable contribution to a better climate in Hanau by improving air quality and serving as a habitat for animals.
A forest full of diversity
The new community forest will consist of robust tree species, including field maple, silver lime, hawthorn, ash and mulberry. This selection not only ensures a beautiful landscape, but also strengthens biodiversity in the region. The cost of collecting and caring for a single tree is 100 euros, with the Hanau Infrastructure Service (HIS) covering the planting costs and maintenance.
What is particularly noteworthy is that each of the newly planted trees will have a sign containing information about the respective donors. This creates a personal connection between citizens and their trees. Dr. Sabine Laber-Szillat, chairwoman of the Großauheim local history and history association, will recite a poem during the opening ceremony, which will give the event an additional cultural touch.
An ongoing project
The Citizens' Forest on Heinrich-Heine-Weg is not the only one of its kind. It complements the existing Citizens' Forest on Lortzingstrasse in the northwest district and is part of a project that was launched in 2016 by resolutions of the local councils. The next planting campaign is already planned for autumn 2026, so that planting trees could become a long-term tradition in Hanau.
Anyone interested in donating a tree can contact HIS-Green Spaces directly. You can obtain further information by calling 06181 / 2950-6460 or by email at his-gruenflaechen@hanau.de.
With the opening of this community forest, Hanau is sending a strong signal for environmental protection and coexistence in the city. A great example of how sustainability can be lived in the community!
