20 years of the municipal job center: success story and new challenges!

On October 25, 2025, the Hochtaunuskreis municipal job center celebrated its 20th anniversary. Antje van der Heide and Rolf Keil praised the achievements and developments of the past two decades. Since the introduction of the Second Social Code (SGB II) on January 1, 2005, the framework for social security and professional integration for millions of people in Germany has changed fundamentally. The SGB II, which repeatedly raised aspects worthy of discussion until it was renamed “citizens' money”, laid the foundation for, among other things, the merger of unemployment assistance and social assistance.

As [rheinmainverlag.de](https://www.rheinmainverlag.de/2025/10/25/kommunales-jobcenter-hochtaunus- Feiert-20-jaehriges-beesten/) reports, the Hochtaunuskreis was one of the first Hessian option municipalities to set up a municipal job center. The focus of the anniversary was not only looking back at what has been achieved, but also recognizing the employees and social networks who work tirelessly to support the people living in the region.

Pleasing developments in the Hochtaunuskreis

The labor market in Germany has changed significantly over the last 20 years. The number of unemployed has been almost halved and employment subject to social security contributions has increased. There are currently around 240,000 people living in the Hochtaunus district, and 11,933 of them are entitled to benefits from the job center, including 8,484 people who are able to work. Of these, 4,458 are women and 4,026 are men, highlighting the challenges and needs in the region.
However, many challenges still remain to be overcome as not all of the reform's objectives have been achieved.

The job center employees do everything they can to open up individual perspectives and enable social participation. Together with those entitled to benefits, they look for solutions for integration into the labor market. The SGB II, which was also allowed to bear the old name “Unemployment Benefit II” until June 30, 2023, not only promotes financial stability, but also offers various support services.

A look into the future

New initiatives, such as the Participation Opportunities Act, remind us that combating long-term unemployment remains a central issue. While the introduction of work opportunities with compensation for additional expenses has improved the situation of many people, the current standard rate is also often the target of criticism - both in terms of the amount and social participation.

As part of the anniversary celebration, it was pointed out that job centers must continue to think innovatively and respond to social changes. The latest entry into force of changes to citizens' money, which will apply from January 1, 2023, also shows how dynamically this area is developing.

Overall, it remains to be seen how politics and society will develop together in order to set the course for the next 20 years. The Hochtaunuskreis municipal job center will continue to be a central player in supporting its citizens in the future.
