Fighting against addiction: Left demands quick support for offers of help!

Last week, the left Main-Taunus had a lot to do when she visited various social providers and clubs in the region. Important discussions were held, among other things with youth counseling and youth welfare (JJ), the organization Evim, the women's shelter women women MTK and the animal protection association Sulzbach. The visits should focus on the concerns of the institutions and address concrete problems, such as Taunus Nachrichten

A central point of the visits was the center for youth counseling and addiction help in Hofheim. The head, Lydia Rauh, reported on the challenges of addictions that are as diverse as it is serious. Supplements such as alcohol and nicotine as well as behavioral addictions such as gaming and media addiction were particularly at a glance. There is agreement here that a nationwide ban on laughing gas and containment of advertising for tobacco and alcohol are absolutely necessary. In addition, the partial legalization of cannabis is considered a new hurdle for addiction help.

addiction advice under pressure

The situation in addiction advice is serious. According to DHS are the addiction advice centers in Germany under immense printing. The complexity of the cases has increased, and at the same time there is increasing demand. Many facilities even have to shorten speaking and opening times and some have already had to close their doors. Three quarters of the publicly financed advice centers cannot cover their costs. Over half of these facilities report a deficit of up to 20%, a third has to cope with an even greater deficit.

These figures illustrate the need for political measures to support the addiction advice centers. The role of outpatient addiction advice is increasing: Every sales euro saves an estimated 17 euros in follow-up costs, as a Bavarian study shows. In view of the high economic costs due to the consumption of alcohol and tobacco, which amount to around 154 billion euros, a rethink is required, emphasizes the DHS report

variety of social offers

Another highlight of the visits was the Hattersheim Schlockerhof, where the work of the workshops for people with disabilities focused on. Evim, who works there, offers many solutions and conveys about a quarter of the employees in external workplaces. The desire for more external jobs in public administration also became loud. The exchange with the organization women help women make the uncertain funding situation and the continuing need for more family rooms in the women's shelter.

also a visit to the Sulzbach animal shelter showed the challenges of underfunding in this area. Only 20% of the 500,000 euros required are covered by found animal levies. At least 290 animals were conveyed last year. The sponsoring association wants cat protection regulations and the establishment of pigeon houses for population control.

DIE LINKE has set itself the task of bringing these topics into the local political debate in order to noticeably improve the situation of social sponsors in the Main-Taunus district. What remains to be done? A strong commitment to a sustainable social policy is now required!
