Flood exercise Gilgamesch: Streside for administrative rods starts!

Last weekend, a comprehensive stress test for the administrative and leaderships of the Limburg-Weilburg and Rhein-Lahn district took place as part of the cross-country flood exercise "Gilgamesch". This exercise, which extended over three days from March 28 to 30, 2025, simulated extreme floods on the Lahn and was the result of almost one -year preparation organized by Lülf+ Sicherheitberatung GmbH and the two counties.

With the participation of more than 100 people who worked actively on various flood scenarios, the reaction ability to crisis situations was challenged. Under the direction of fire and disaster protection inspector (BKI) Guido Erler and his deputy Lars Ritscher, the administrative rods from the Lahnanlieger communities of the two counties in Weinbach, Weilburg, Runkel and Limburg as well as in Diez, Bad Ems and Lahnstein were put to the test. The exercise remained without emergency vehicles and forces, since it was a staff framework exercise.

goals of the exercise and feedback

The main goal of the "Gilgamesch" exercise was to subject the organization and processes of the rods to a stress test and to improve the skills to cope with emergencies. "We have to be well prepared for such situations," emphasized District Administrator Michael Köberle. Deputy BKI Marcus Grün also said satisfied about the internal processes and the commitment of the participants, which was secured by the new training courses of the past two years.

The exercise also served as a test run for the new staff rooms in Lollschied. In the final exercise on Sunday, the participants successfully tested and adapted their strategies. "It is important that we strengthen the cooperation in the administrative staff," said Erler. District Administrator Jörg Denninghoff joined the thanks to everyone involved and underlined the importance of the exercise for future real missions.

optimization of the processes

After completing the exercise, there is now a comprehensive evaluation. The aim is to use the knowledge gained to optimize the processes and organization. "We want to learn from every scenario and constantly improve our ability to act," explained Denninghoff. The results will be summarized in the next few days in order to continue to consolidate the structures and remain capable of acting in an emergency.

The next opportunity to communicate and obtain feedback is already imminent. It remains exciting how the results of the "Gilgamesch" exercise will flow into the strategic planning of the counties in the long term. The cross -border cooperation is on the best way to sustainably improve the security standards in the region.

For interested parties there is further information on the exercise on the websites of the Rhein-Lahn-Kreis Limburg-Weilburg] (https://www.landkreis-limburg-weilburg.de/presse-oeffentenbeit/pressemitteilungen/details/laenderUebergreifendende-hochwasserben-gilgamesch-Ststest--die-und-fuehrungsaebe).

We can be excited to see how competence and commitment will master the waves of the challenges next time.
