Future of the Michelstadt city center: Invitation to the city discussion on August 11th

Frankfurter Str. 3, 64720 Michelstadt, Deutschland - Again and again it turns out that the inner cities are under pressure. In Michelstadt, the signs are placed on change and renewal. On Monday, August 11th, at 7 p.m. there will be an important event in the town house, which focuses on improving the quality of stay and visitor frequency in the city center. Organized by the city administration of Michelstadt and the IHK Darmstadt, Mayor Dr. Tobias Robischon and Dr. Daniel Theobald from the IHK opened.

The focus is on Julia Nawra's lecture, an expert in visual marketing. She will talk about how the attractiveness of the shops and the city center can be increased through targeted measures. On this occasion, the results of last year's city walk are also presented, which should collect numerous interested attracts and ideas for the revitalization of Michelstadt. The topic of the event is "quality of stay in shops and in the center" - one aspect that is becoming more important than ever today, especially with regard to the challenges that inner cities have to experience through digitization and changed consumption behavior. Information on registration for the event will be possible by e-mail to innerstadt@michelstadt.de by August 4th.

The challenges for inner cities

The location of the inner cities is not rosy. A comprehensive study entitled "Vitale Cities 2024" of the IFH Cologne shows that many inner cities in Europe suffer from vacancies and lower number of visitors. Essential factors are the consequences of pandemic and the changing consumption habits. Michelstadt is also not spared from these developments. The study emphasizes that it needs "places for everyone" to revive the city centers and have to create experiences in order to address younger generations. Quality of stay and a wide range of leisure and cultural offerings are key to success.

To meet these challenges, according to the study, there are seven basic rules on inner city vitalization. These include the need to differentiate target groups, optimize the visitor journey and strive for multifunctionality instead of monostructure. The promotion of sustainable concepts and combating vacancies are also of central importance. Citizen participation is considered essential so that sustainable solutions can be found. Pop-up stores and creative intermediate uses are successful examples of these approaches.

A look into the future

If you look into the future, a complex image reveals itself that confronts the inner cities with all the challenges of urbanization, climate change and the turn of traffic. The research project of the Difu and Fraunhofer ISI deals with the strategic foresight in seven municipalities in order to better anticipate future opportunities and challenges. Here the dialogue with stakeholders and citizens is considered essential to work together on solutions.

These developments clearly show: Michelstadt is on track and has a good knack for the upcoming changes. The dialogue and exchange with the population are important to make the city center sustainable. It remains exciting how the plans will develop in the coming months and which new impulses can contribute to the revitalization of Michelstadt. A warm welcome to everyone who wants to participate in the future of our city!
